If you own a holiday home, have you cancelled future bookings?

I'm a permanent resident in a small village by the sea in South Devon. We're starting to see an influx of holidaymakers both here and in surrounding towns and villages.

They are not welcome for obvious reasons. So are you still letting your property as per normal, wherever it is the UK?

@AnythingConsidered I’d double check that. When I had a holiday that went tits up because the company went bust my credit card company refunded it even though only the £100 deposit went on my card

That was a few years ago though

We were booked in for a week in a self catering cottage on the coast in early May. We’d only paid the deposit so far, but the balance was due, and they wouldn’t let us re book for a later date so we cancelled as we don’t think our insurance would cover us if if the cottage owner don’t actually cancel, which they seem reluctant to do so far. Even if we’re not on proper lockdown by then, it would have been rubbish anyway as few attractions would be open and we’d be socially distancing. And we wouldn’t want to bring the virus to a coastal area without great hospital facilities.

We’ve lost our deposit but at least not the balance!

*doesn't

Beesisabuzzin · 22/03/2020 10:20

@AnythingConsidered I'm pretty sure that as you paid the deposit on your card you will be covered.

OhTheRoses · 22/03/2020 10:25

AnythingConsidered if we are locked down for your dates your insurers may cover you. If the owners offer alternatives, your insurer's won't and both sides lose.

I can absolutely see where the owners are coming from because it's exactly where we are coming from.

We are in the same position as @Bernadette. We are in a small terrace with no garden and have a child with ADHD and autism and would love to go to the booked cottage but probably wont.

Karwomannghia · 22/03/2020 10:29

We had one booked for next week. We can reschedule but that’s no use as all future school holiday slots are booked up anyway. I’ve emailed with a list of reasons why they should be cancelling but don’t hold out much hope. Centerparcs have offered a full refund to their customers.

I have one in North Wales, and I have cancelled all bookings for April and May and have refunded everyone.

I have no idea whether this will mean I ultimately end up losing it - probably - but my dad is at massive risk of dying from this or even worse being someone they have to choose not to treat if the NHS gets overwhelmed and there is no way I am encouraging people to do non-essential travel.

I have to say though not everyone on the park is doing the same ......

Thanks everyone, didn't mean to de-rail the thread, but will take a look at credit card option. Bank account doesn't have travel insurance, and we didn't take out travel insurance for this weekend, cos it is a shared cost between the 3 families. Stupid on reflection, but each family was trying to save every penny to get this weekend to happen!

Fortunately, we do have insurance for our family holiday in August.

AnythingConsidered · 22/03/2020 10:33

@OhTheRoses hopefully there will be protection implemented for all of us, especially if this is your source of income. So sorry, we're all in this position

whiteroseredrose · 22/03/2020 10:34

I'm hoping we close the borders as we've got a trip to Iceland booked. Flight with Easyjet still on, Blue Lagoon still open....

Obviously we're not going but it will be expensive as I don't think insurance will cover it.
