Masks and gloves- family dispute

Had a Skype with the family, across four countries.
-Some of us think that masks and gloves protect you from the virus and are wearing them. One has a custom fit TotoBobo mask, the other is reusing and washing a single use cloth mask. Both are wearing gloves as well.

-Some of us are following WHO guidelines which say there is no evidence that masks protect healthy people from infections so you do not need to wear one in public and that gloves are worse than bare hands that are washed frequently as the key is to not touch your face and if you wear gloves you are more likely to have fewer hand washings and touch your face with a dirty glove.

-Some agree with WHO guidelines but are wearing masks and gloves anyway because it is socially expected to indicate you are taking the epidemic seriously.

So who is right?

I don’t think there is a right answer.
I live in China so wearing a mask is compulsory, but it is also common to wear a mask anytime you have a cold or if you work in a customer facing role so we are used to seeing them. Even if a mask is not effective at preventing the virus it does have some advantages: you don’t touch your face as frequently and it is a clear reminder that, at the moment, nothing is safe and it prompts us all to wash our hands more frequently and generally be more aware of risks.
Gloves: i would not bother with the woolly kind, but the plastic/surgical type should be worn by staff working on checkouts etc imo.
