Aibu to think covid 19 might cause tonsillitis in kids?

Child has woken in the night with a high fever. And what looks like tonsillitis. I hope not as I'm a single parent with asthma (for which I've never been hospitalised). Is this possible it might be caused by covid-19? Is there anything I can realistically do as a parent of a six year old to reduce risks to me? I realise I'm probably infected and we should self isolate for 14 days.

There’s a whole bloody covid 19 topic ffs

My DS had tonsillitis last weekend, it's during the rounds. No coughing developed and he is absolutely fine now.

Sorry to hear this. Just wanted to add that mine vomit copiously with tonsillitis which my GP told me is normal.

Good luck.

Ring 111 and put it on speakerphone.

Just because Covid-19 is a thing does not mean the other normal viruses and infections aren’t currently doing the rounds.

I have just had tonsillitis. I get it every bloody year at this time.

No, tonsillitis is its own thing still as is norovirus, influenza, the common cold...

People really need to stop reading the news so much, it’s making everyone ridiculously anxious. My DD had tonsillitis last month, cleared up a couple of days later with good old penicillin.

YellowSlipper · 22/03/2020 08:22

Coronavirus is not the only illness that now exists...!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 22/03/2020 08:23

We have almost certainly had corona in this household and the last symptom was awful swollen sore throats.

However viral rather than bacterial tonsillitis although I did think it was going to go that way!

Bloody hell Angelo, who rattled your cage? Don’t be an arse.
OP, don’t apologise. You’re allowed to post wherever you want where you want.

I saw some stats yesterday that around 74000 people had been tested for Covid 19 in the UK and 68000 of them DID NOT HAVE IT. I'm assuming that they mostly had viral type symptoms to get tested in the first place. My point being that most viral illnesses are NOT coronavirus - there are lots of other viruses around as there would be in any other year.

Jellybean27 · 22/03/2020 11:16

Same. My 8 year old reached a fever of 39.5 last week :( couldn’t see white patches until a couple of days in. It’s not crazy to assume CV initially, just be relieved it most likely isn’t!

Neverenoughcoffee · 22/03/2020 11:42

Tonsillitis, meaning inflamed tonsils is an immune response. It is most commonly bacterial but can be viral.
I haven't seen reports of that as a symptom, but then we haven't been given much of a picture of what it looks like in children, other than its usually mild.
I think it's good and responsible that you're considering it could be CV.

cinammonbuns · 22/03/2020 11:56

No evidence so far of tonsillitis being in any way related to Covid 19. Covid 19 is not the only illness that exists now.
