Workmen in garden this week?
ProseccoSupernova · 22/03/2020 06:47
I am fully adhering to social distancing and not seeing family etc.
However we have got a local company coming next week to do our drive and patio (arranged months ago). They have said they can still come and will maintain distance/not need to come inside the house etc. Not even sure I can cancel/postpone and don’t want to make their financial situation worse than it’s likely to get over next few months by doing so.
Would you still think it’s ok for them to do their work? I’d imagine many people are in similar situations with contractors etc!

I’m in exactly the same position. I’m concerned about the noise as I know neighbours will be working from home.
walksen · 22/03/2020 06:57
I doubt it will be continuously noisy particularly. Just when they use a whacker plate and cut slabs etc.
I suppose if you they can maintain distance there is minimal risk as per government advice particularly as they are outside.
A bit of work could make a big difference to them personally though.
MooPointCowsOpinion · 22/03/2020 06:59
Same position here and I’m very reluctant to cancel because I’m sure it will his last job for a while, plus if we are stuck at home for months we could do with somewhere to sit in the garden...
YouCannotPossiblyBeHungry · 22/03/2020 07:02
They will be levelling the garden with a digger and removing a tree stump as part of our work so maybe a lot of noise from that. Was planning on messaging the neighbours today where I have a contact number. No contact with the workers will be needed which is why it can go ahead from that point of view. It’s been booked for months so I’m thinking to go ahead, but not great timing.

We are 2 months into a 5 month extension. The builders are continuing at the moment, they have a portaloo and we provide tea/coffee supplies in the garage with disposable paper cups.

A self employed disabled worker here. Getting work is very hard at the best of times as everyone looks at what I can't do not what I can.
I'm terrified that I'll be barred from the last two weeks of (outdoor) work I have, as it's cheaper to shut down the facilities and easier to say no, even though I'd be out there and have no contact with anyone.
Adult self employed dc's thrown out of work suddenly and not allowed to claim their share of the rent via U/C as apparently "no obligation to pay" their portion, and we're all in trouble here having always chosen working hard to avoid 'benefits.'
Please where possible keep those of us with fewer choices able to earn our rent.
Please don't put the comforts of those able to WFH over the survival of those not.

So am I right that all building, landscaping work etc on private residences needs to stoop because of the lockdown? I was very clear apart from the 'ok to travel to work if not possible to work from home'. It did not say this was just key workers.
Hollyhead · 24/03/2020 05:50
I think keep your distance and carry on. The money will help the economy - I’m still having a fence replaced next week, we’ll stay in from them and pay online.
Sewingbea · 24/03/2020 05:56
We're having a tree taken down on Saturday. We'll keep our distance and get it done as I'm pretty sure that the tree surgeon will still want the work. I'm at work still (key worker) so the distance is more to protect the tree man (and yes I will tell him that before he comes so he can make the decision himself).

Advice for the housing, construction & building maintenance industries:
🔹If you can work from home, do so.
🔹If you are working on site, you can continue to do so. But follow Public Health England guidance on social distancing.
🔹Outside of work, remember
