Gratitude to supermarket workers. And how can I thank my Lidl checkout operator??

How can I give a present to my local Lidl checkout operator?

I was going to give him a thank you card with £50 inside....but realised this is probably not a good idea, what with them handling cash, I could end up getting him in trouble with his employer!

I thought about getting him a gift card, but not sure which one to get.

Also , I don't want to come across like a total weirdo stalker!!!

I just wanna give him a nice big thank you. I go to Lidl about once a week and always end on his checkout. He is a very lovely young man...always genuinely kind and caring. But today while I was in the (very long) que, i observed him enforcing the new rules. Some arse was trying to buy 10 tins of baby formula! Checkout man dealt with it calmly and professionally!

I see him working there....no latex gloves, no ppe etc. The poor soul is probably being constantly exposed to the virus! And sitting on the checkout for minimum wage with a friendly helpful smile on his face!

How can I thank this lovely young man with out coming across like a total nutter.

And, yes I will email the store/head office with feedback. But I think sometimes a personal act of gratitude is needed! (And I can afford the £50, so please no need to discuss/dispute that!)

Honestly, the thanks is enough, and maybe to stand up to the rude ones if you get a chance. I work in Aldi, today I had a man scream in my face because I said he couldn’t buy 6 packs of burgers, I’m a very petite heavily pregnant female and he was INCREDIBLY aggressive towards me. I closed my till for a cry in the back. Just having a customers support during an issue, or even after it makes the world of difference to us.

It is against our company policy to accept money personally from customers, or anything with monetary value (so a gift card is out of the question as well) and I can only assume Lidl have a similar policy! You could well get him into serious trouble!

Well done Kitty. Remember for every arse you deal with, there will be a whole load of people in the que backing you up.

You guys really are the unsung heroes of this crisis.

Thank you for what you do.

After I checked out, I overheard the store manager/supervisor on the phone to an employee.... she was ranting that unless they have BOTH symptoms (temp and cough) they had to come to work!

Would it be okay to just hand over a thank you card then? With some words of appreciation? Bit no money '

I was too far back on the que to get involved. But I will remember what you have said and I will do my best to support you guys

Thank you cards are very very welcome!!! In my store they get displayed in the staff room until you decide to take it home. Honestly the nice customers make our days, as they can be quite long (especially at the moment!) and quite difficult. My regular customers mean a lot to me, and I genuinely care about them even if I only see them for a few minutes once or twice a week. If you were my customer I’d be ecstatic with a card a little thank you in passing.

@naughtycat:
I don't work in a supermarket but did once work in a public facing service.
One of the most moving experiences I ever had in my 40 odd year career, was a letter of thanks from a relative of my "customer".😉
The letter was sent, not to me but just about as high up the food chain as the relative could go.
And it named me.
This, I think, is what made the difference to how I felt about it.
My senior manager, brought a copy of the letter to me , and said
"someone out there thinks you're Mother Teresa Wingedharpy! Well done".
No fuss was made but she gave it to me to keep.
I still have it and it still brings a tear to my eye when I read it.
It's just lovely to feel that someone noticed your personal efforts and appreciated them.
So, that would be my recommendation.

Okay, I will pop in with a thank you card for the lovely young man on my checkout! And yes, I really do think he is mother Teresa 😂

I dont know if lidl have a facebook page, but perhaps post something on there so those higher up can see how appreciated their staff are. It's a high pressure job right now for retail workers and some employers are giving some sort of thank you to their staff. In another essential shop this week I spoke to a lady who had worked 7 days this week from 7am to 8pm due to staff shortages, put up with all sorts of abuse, probably on minimum wage and was still smiley as usual. I sent an email to the CEO.

Also the supermarkets must be doing all right from this situation, an extra weeks holiday or some type of bonus wouldn't hurt them.

kittykat7210 · 22/03/2020 09:52

Mrsfussypants

Our manager bought us all Easter eggs and dominos this week 😂 and has this morning publicly put on the Facebook page for the surrounding areas a post about not coming in if feeling unwell to protect staff and that any abuse from now on will lead to being barred from the store (feel like this one is about time though!)

Won’t get any extra holiday unfortunately, or a bonus, but honestly I’ll just be happy with a safe job at this point in time!
