NHS staff (non frontline admin)

My DH works at our local hospital in Finance, he can work from home and has done in the past in certain situations.

He has already sent some of his team to wfh due to their circumstances (pregnant, transplant patient etc)

However he himself is high risk (severe asthma with history of hospital admissions and steroids) but his boss is saying he must remain in work as they want to retain as many staff as they can on site.

AIBU to think the NHS themselves are going against their own advice? Im terrified of him picking this up whilst exposing himself to the hospital site everyday.

We live 5 min drive from the hospital and he can go in ad hoc for urgent things but I feel he should be working at home otherwise.

Any thoughts please / advice?

He should be staying home, he can self isolate as he is in the at risk category...

How does this work for pay?

He would get sick pay wouldn't he? O would suggest he gives them a choice: WfH or go off sick.

In other hospitals admin staff are being told they will be assisting with patients (with things like bedpans etc) to free up nurses.

Your DH needs to wfh or else endlessly self isolate. His life is not worth risking for the stupidly or some companies. I’ve heard of so many companies who have this ridiculous policy of not letting people wfh when they can without any implications to their role. I think they should be named and shamed, and it needs to be made clear that they will be responsible for people dying as a result.

Yes I agree

They have all been told they may be drafted in for other duties but at the moment his job would need to be done regardless to keep the hospital operational in the background so it's highly unlikely he would be called in even without the health situation that he has.

I'm being told all other departments in the hospital have the same situations, an NHS hospital not following NHS guidelines due to individual managers opinions and it's making me really angry.

Yes, he should be working from home. And in a corporate role with the tech to support there is no reason why this should not happen. I suggest he brings his laptop and whatever else he needs home with him, then contacts the trust the next day advising them he has been informed he is in a high risk group. They can either accept his offer to work at home as a reasonable adjustment or pay him sick pay for 12 weeks whilst he self isolates. Occupational health will undoubtedly support this. Your husband's boss is a dick.

However if he were in my team I would expect your husband to be self isolating entirely for the 12 weeks, no popping to Tesco. I would also expect him to be working his ass off in any capacity he is able whilst WFH as the staff left in the hospital will be picking up so much shit, and this will be made worse by colleagues who are self isolating but do not have home working capability.
