Staff opening early for NHS staff...

I keep reading conflicting times. My father is frontline NHS. Every day after work he's tried to do his shopping and the shelves are empty. He's just worked 6 14 hour shifts on the trot. He's now at home eating porridge. He's not complaining. He really just wants to do a proper shop so he's got some good meals before his next shift. Can anyone tell me if any shops have an opening slot tomorrow for NHS staff?

Tescos are meant to be opening an hour early for NHS staff tomorrow.

HappyHammy · 21/03/2020 21:01

Where does he live.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 21/03/2020 21:03

Tesco 0900 for nhs

GhettoMatrix · 22/03/2020 10:41

He just phoned me in tears because he couldn't get in to the shop. He didn't bother with his shopping. People had turned up with their partners and children, whole families being let in. People queuing outside. People turning up with other people's NHS IDs trying to pretend to be them. The first time in my life I've ever heard my father cry. He's now on his way back to work.

Morissons every day except Sunday 7am to 8am for those with NHS badges

GhettoMatrix · 22/03/2020 10:45

He will be at work every day this week from 6. He will be off again next Sunday. He's looking after a whole department. He's going to ask a friend if he can find some bits and pieces for him. I will be able to help him out after next week.

I feel for your dad. My Dsis (NHS nurse) went to Tesco this morning but the queue was MASSIVE so she left. It is not just NHS staff going.

Howmanysleepsnow · 22/03/2020 10:50

Where is he based? Maybe someone can help.
Or try nextdoor.com, lots of people happy to pick up stuff for people who can’t get it for whatever reason.

GhettoMatrix · 22/03/2020 10:51

@lifeisabeach09 he took a photo. I won't publish it. There was a family of 7 present. Two adults. It's so selfish. There were so many whole families there and people trying to get their mates in. He just left in the end.

GhettoMatrix · 22/03/2020 10:56

@howmanysleepsnow thank you. His friend is going to try and help. He doesn't want much. Just some toilet roll, bread mix for his bread maker, some frozen meals he can whack in the oven when he gets home. I think he's just feeling overwhelmed by the state of the NHS he's worked in for 45 years.

Ghetto, it's incredibly selfish and needs to be strictly enforced by the supermarkets.

Whenwillthisbeover · 22/03/2020 10:59

DD is frontline NHS as are all her friends (stayed in uni city and they all work at city hospital) they have been sharing instagram stories this morning of the NHS queues for food. It’s horrendous. These were queues for miles trailing round the car park. They left.

DD says she has been able to get most things from the Tesco Express close to the hospital and university campus most days. The students have gone home and the Express is used almost exclusively by staff now.

Staff seem to find it easier to shop daily for bits, milk one day, bread the next. Chicken one days, onions the next. I think it’s open 6-11 so even the 13 hours shifters can grab a few things.

CalleighDoodle · 22/03/2020 11:00

Sounds like an opportunity to get nightclub bouncers in work. They dont often mind offending people in queues so could keep good order. Rather than security in supermarkets who are more used to a completely different kind of management.

Your df needs to ask for help from his network. Look on facebook for business springing up everywhere from pubs restaurants farms switching to delivery of food parcels and even meals on wheels.

Alone07 · 22/03/2020 11:10

Your poor dad, yep I think they need bouncer type people to enforce and stop whole families and people from exploiting (I have a big family and even if we wasnt self isolating I wouldn't be taking them all not a chance).

PinkSpring · 22/03/2020 11:16

I went to Tesco this morning as DP works for them. We had to queue to get in, the crowds were horrendous / definitely not social distancing!! I don't believe for one second all of those people were meant to be there.....

Hardly any stock, people seemed like they were buying three of bloody everything!!

People were milling around by half 9 waiting for tills to open do the queues for them would have been like an hour or more

I left - I only wanted formula for my baby and they didn't even have it!!

Duchessofblandings · 22/03/2020 11:19

Government needs to order (and pay for) supermarkets to put together nutritionally balanced food boxes for NHS staff, for collection on production of ID, or delivery straight to healthcare settings.

Herja · 22/03/2020 11:22

My local fb has a group offering to shop for the vulnerable and for frontline NHS staff, and it's a big city with little community spirit generally. Is there anything like that in his area?

Rosehip10 · 22/03/2020 11:35

As with the move towards a lockdown, people behaviour in supermarkets will lead to rationing and set item to buy.

HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 13:25

Its an absolute disgrace. I would like shops, hotels, attractions, restaurants and anyone who has closed and now has spare supplies set up vans in the staff carparks and either donate or sell discounted goods to the staff. I hope hospitals have closed their restaurants to all visitors and patients and are for staff only. The catering managers could give away any unused food and sell by date foods. Maybe local community groups could help out. Are you happy to tell us where your dad is based. There is a lot of local support where I live.

CharlieWeasley · 22/03/2020 14:14

Does his hospital have an any shops? I know that's a longshot but ours has a tiny m&s food which is well stocked at the minute, I guess because there are no visitors coming in. Its expensive but good for picking up a couple of bits. Or any of his neighbours got an online slot booked who could add him a couple of things on?

bluechameleon · 22/03/2020 14:20

Is there a local FB group that can help? I am a member of one in my town and people like your Dad can post and ask someone to do their shopping for them. The money is transferred by PayPal or bank transfer so it can be completely contact free. They are checking that people are DBS checked before allowing people to exchange money.

GhettoMatrix · 22/03/2020 14:39

Thank you. I've joined Facebook so I can look for these groups (neither of us are on social media). His hospital has shops but nothing like m&s. There is a WHSmith and a hospital café. He has called and is feeling a bit better. It's such a nightmare. I feel so frustrated that I can't help.

Has he got any polish/Turkish type supermarkets nearby? They've not been as mobbed
