Let's look at the positives of this coronavirus situation

  • Less pollution from people flying and commuting
  • Many of us will save money from not using public transport and petrol
  • With cancelled foreign and UK holidays we'll save even more money
  • Economising on toilet paper, food, clothing - everything basically, and cutting down on consumption because of fears of no income or no supplies in the shops is good for climate change and reducing carbon footprint
  • Both the 1918 Spanish flu and this coronavirus pandemics were caused by people keeping animals for human consumption. This is a great reason to turn, if not vegan, then at least vegetarian.
  • Schools and workplaces are making better use of remote working. This may increase people's work/life balance in the long term.
  • There is a greater community spirit in some places
  • There is a huge public understanding on germ transmission and control now which one hopes will continue after coronavirus and help to stem other diseases spreading.
  • Public places, nurseries, schools, doctors surgeries, stores etc having entered a more hygenic regime with disinfecting everything and implementing stricter controls to prevent virus transmission, may continue this in post-coronavirus times so that there is generally less infections going about.
  • People seem to be taking more care of themselves - being more conscious of exercise and nutrition to boost their immunity
  • Children may learn more life skills whilst not being at school

I am sure there are more. Just trying to put a positive spin on things...

People (women?) making their own bread.
People eating less meat because it doesn't store, and eating more pulses.

anyname147 · 21/03/2020 20:17

Bollocks to this being a reason to be vegan. Veganism will ruin this planet.

anyname147 · 21/03/2020 20:19

err how will veganism ruin the planet? interesting statement but I don't follow?

I’m hoping vaccination rates will rise - so many people don’t bother because we have been lucky enough to avoid major epidemics in recent years of viral illnesses. Hopefully people will now see that horrible infections still exist and we are very lucky to have the means to protect our children against the majority of them!

GetRid · 21/03/2020 20:30

Another positive could be that Donald Trump loses the election.

OutingMyself · 21/03/2020 20:32

Aside from the pollution, I love being able to look up and see the sky mostly clear of planes. And to hear how quiet it is outside.

applesandpears33 · 21/03/2020 20:34

Many of us will get better at using IT. I've been using technology I haven't used before and wouldn't have done without social distancing.

MsChatterbox · 21/03/2020 20:40

I've potty trained my son during isolation.

Windy1234 · 21/03/2020 20:41

People will hopefully start appreciating the farmers that produce their food, rather than the slating they have taken lately off the media. People will also appreciate the local fresh food we produce in our countries.

ilovecakeandwine · 21/03/2020 20:51

Good thread Grin
Positives
Traffic quiet
Learning not to be so wasteful with food
Appreciate life and that we take things for granted.
Hopefully people will appreciate the ones they care about I know I do.
Material things don't matter as long as you have your health .
Also in my experience it's brought out the worse ( panic buying) but also the best in people. Friends and colleagues coming together to support each other .
I will never ever take anything for granted again . If this has taught me anything Its made me stronger and if and I will get through this and I will is to make sure I never forget this.

Eireni · 21/03/2020 20:55

I think people will be more prepared in general which is a good thing - household stocking/supplies etc.

noblegiraffe · 21/03/2020 21:01

I burned my chin with cheese from a freshly cooked pizza yesterday and because of social distancing no one can see. (Perhaps a more personal positive).

Watermelontea · 21/03/2020 21:01

Hopefully will appreciate their loved ones more, those who they don’t live with, when they can return to normal life and see them again.

Normal day-to-day freedoms and luxuries won’t be taken for granted anymore.

ilovecakeandwine · 21/03/2020 21:18

Also all the jobs round the house that I'll never get round to doing , I'll have a lovely clean house .

shellysheridan · 21/03/2020 21:24

I'm saving a fortune not using make up and my skin has never glowed so much!

carly2803 · 21/03/2020 21:27

more time with kids - quality time not rushing round with work!

we definitely will not be vegetarian or vegan though haha

Todayissunny · 21/03/2020 21:29

Better family relationships. In our case anyway. My dcs are absolutely lovely and not fighting at all. Outside pressure taken off them and we are spending more quality time together.
I'm also talking much more to mum and siblings living in other countries.

TootsieTweets · 21/03/2020 21:34

Im hoping people with appreciate local shops more.

We have a local farm shop and people at work say its expensive.
They dont think about the freshness, the time, the choice, the staff wages, the everything really. Its a shame.

ADreamOfGood · 21/03/2020 21:37

@GetRid his ratings are going up!

Headlice won't spread because children aren't in school.

ADreamOfGood · 21/03/2020 21:38

@MsChatterbox well done to you, and to him!

Eireni · 21/03/2020 21:40

We might only have the Tories for 5yrs rather than 10???

Chelsea567 · 21/03/2020 21:42

Hopefully people will be nicer to supermarket workers!

EightNineTen · 21/03/2020 21:42

Me and a couple of my neighbours are seeing a lot more of each other which is lovely. We're all at home now. We've been chatting and laughing over our fences. Me and one neighbour have said how nice it is to slow down. None of us have much money, but our community spirit is enriching us.

mrshoho · 21/03/2020 21:44

The nhs will be the no 1 priority and it won't just be all talk.

We'll realise that profit and greed is of no use when it come down to life or death.
