Asthma

Could anyone tell me what the evidence is regarding increased risks for asthmatics?

I have asthma and will be working from home from now on, but dp is a key worker and will be at work next week, so I'm trying to work out how much I should worry about him bringing the virus home.

No real advice but following as both and my dd have asthma.

Read that asthmatics are placed in the higher risk category.

Kittywampus · 21/03/2020 19:24

That must be a worry, thankfully neither of our children has it. Are you planning on self isolating?

I'm asthmatic and end up on steroids just from having a cold. I'm self isolating for 12 weeks.

My husband is a key worker and has asthma. His hospital have advised that he still has to work and to try to maintain 2 metre distance.

Dreamersandwishers · 21/03/2020 19:30

Another asthmatic. I think the extra risk comes as the virus attacks the lungs, and ours are already compromised so we have a head start...
It’s not a huge % extra risk but better safe...

Thanks all, interesting to hear your experiences. Scratchbass my dp has said that his asthmatic colleagues still have to work but are being given less risky roles.

My asthma is generally well controlled with steroid inhalers (seretide). However it flares up when I get a cold so this virus does worry me.

DD is treated for asthma but is under 2 and her asthma, if it even is asthma, seems quite mild so I'm not unduly worried. She will continue to go to nursery as my DH is front line NHS staff and I will also be working. A close relative of mine had mild asthma and is also front line NHS staff, so far it doesn't seem like they are able to make any adjustments to his duties/role to try and limit his exposure to CV. However he is in his 20s and in good health otherwise so again not particularly worried.

SamsMumsCateracts · 21/03/2020 20:24

This is worrying me. My asthma is not that well controlled despite being on Fostair. Every cold I get means steroid tablets, however, I work in a nursery and am still expected to work. We are only caring for children of key workers, but the list is so long that there are loads of them. The fact they are in contact with their doctor/nurse parents is worrying me. What if they unwittingly bring it in. If I catch it, it could be really nasty and I'm terrified of leaving my own children motherless. Work don't seem to care. We are a small independent nursery with a very stiff upper lip manager who thinks we should just get on with it. It just doesn't seem worth it for a part time, minimum wage job 😔

Kittywampus · 21/03/2020 20:36

My children are also eligible for school and nursery due to dp being a key worker.

Samsmum I would be worried too in your situation and I would hate to think that any of my children's nursery staff were working against their will.

We have several asthmatics and two with diabetes. All having to work.

SamsMumsCateracts · 21/03/2020 20:49

Don't get me wrong, if I had no ties I'd be very willing to still go in, but I have to think about my own children. It's all very well caring for other kids, but what about mine?

MeadowHay · 22/03/2020 12:40

Sam's if you can manage without the income I would consider resigning in your situation if you're that concerned. I would imagine it is not too difficult to find similar work again when this is all over? I know for some people they wouldn't be able to manage without the income though so not possible for everyone. Wishing you all the best. I feel DH is very likely to bring it home to me and DD and then she is very likely to pass it on to nursery staff and the other kids. However that is the case for a number of other children at the nursery whose parents are also front line NHS staff.

SamsMumsCateracts · 22/03/2020 18:51

I could resign, it's pocket money really, but I love my job so much and our nursery so much. My children went there, I'm trained in the speciality that we have and as a family have a deep personal relationship with the nursery and staff, which is why I'm so upset about it all. It's a very, very special place to me. I'm so disappointed.
