Double deficit for parents who pay for childcare!

Obviously we are all going to be affected in some way by the current situation and I know there are people much worse off but I'm suprised I haven't seen more about double deficit affecting parents who are going to lose their salary due to nursery and childminder closures but still have to pay very high childcare fees.

From what I have read, this situation will not be covered by the 80% salary scheme if the work is still available.

My own situation is that I am a single parent of a toddler so there simply are not enough hours in the day for me to complete my work from home while looking after my child on my own. I will however still have to pay private nursery fees so I will have to find several hundreds of pounds a month not covered by whatever benefits I might be entitled to and that is before living costs.

We have heard a lot about the difficulties faced by self employed people (which I very much sympathise with) but there must also be many people in my situation which is also completely unmanageable surely? Or am I missing something?

Will you definitely have to pay nursery fees? Ours (national chain) have said you don't have to pay unless your child is still going in as they'll be using the 80% funding to pay their staff

We are still having to pay 60%

I'm waiting on official confirmation but expect to have to pay full or almost full fees as the nursery will be open for children of key workers and will still have all other overheads.

If they still want you to pay but won't have your child I'd give notice and look for new childcare in September.

Yes cancel the childcare

If everyone cancels there will be no nurseries left to choose when they reopen.

Yes it's a tough call. My point really is that a group of people and working single parents in particular are being disproportionately affected by this and the government don't seem to be doing anything to address this. Yes, lots of people are out of work and the self employed forced to rely on benefits but those most affected by childcare closures are losing salary (with no help from the 80% salary announcement) and still liavle for childcare they are not receiving, so that's a double whammy and will hit some of the most vulnerable in our society.

of course there will still be nurseries if people don't pay the fees throughout. the government has announced numerous packages of support for different situations already and will be announcing more. but even without such help, the buildings will still exist, the equipment will still exist, the experienced and skilled workforce will still exist. the absolute worst that could happen would be that the holding company goes bust and goes into receivership, the receivers won't be able to dispose of any of the assets until the shutdown is over, and at that point sells the whole caboodle to a new owner as a going concern and the nursery reopens under new ownership (probably employing the previous owner as a CEO). but even these circumstances won't actually happen because business will be protected. The shutdown is going to last a while. any parent who is losing salary because of needing to do childcare instead should most certainly give notice on any paid for nursery place they hold but can't use. there will be plenty of childcare places available after the shut down. the business name may be different but the caring people will still be there, and will have been paid via the "80% package" if their employer couldn't keep paying them throughout
