Things like Dentist, Physio, Opticians, Chiropodist.

I have a few appointments this week and next. Obviously close contact to be avoided but they're still open (for now) and we don't know when the next opportunity will be.

For example my ingrown toenail isn't too bad atm but if it's left for 3m will need antibiotics.

Dental check up overdue. Probably fine but if there is something that needs doing, it will be a bigger issue in 6m time

My DS doesn’t have his pee hole in the right place. Fixing it is apparently non-essential and so at six months when he has his growth spurt I am going to have to deal with a baby who is in agony. At that point it will be essential surgery but God knows what the state of the NHS will be like then.

GinandGingerBeer · 21/03/2020 18:39

Check ups = non essential.
Back completely seized up and in agony = essential.

WreckTangled · 21/03/2020 18:40

No. And I would be surprised if they still go ahead going by NHS England's advice that we received at work on Friday. All non urgent appointments are to be cancelled including dentistry, podiatry etc.

Physios are filling in redeployment forms and being told urgent appointments only too prioritising respiratory physio, different if it's private though.

Bagelsandbrie · 21/03/2020 18:41

I think you have to judge it on an individual basis really. My dh had an ultrasound of his stomach this morning. He wasn’t sure if he should go or not but his white blood count has come back low and he has some stomach discomfort so needs to rule cancer out. Thankfully they told us then and there it was all clear. So he now doesn’t need to worry, so it was worth going.

Bookworm83 · 21/03/2020 18:43

I have my 39 weeks midwife appointment next week and not sure if they consider it essential or not.
I'd like to keep it though.

DoubleAction · 21/03/2020 18:43

All of these are.private appointments, if that makes a difference. Which makes me sound very flash but I couldn't get any.of.it on nhs locally

I absolutely wouldn't go. Just look at Italy seriously we're on the exact same path as them people should be staying in as much as possible. This is just a disaster.

halcyondays · 21/03/2020 18:48

I’m sure midwife appointments are considered essential.
Dentists and opticians check ups not so much.

MickeyMoouse · 21/03/2020 18:55

Baby due her last of 3 set vaccinations in April. I really don't want to miss it. Essential or not do we think?

SnoozyLou · 21/03/2020 18:55

Pregnant so don't have much choice (I wouldn't if I did have any choice though!).

The dentist messaged cancelling our appointments next week. If they hadn't, I would have cancelled anyway.

It depends what the appointment is really. If I could avoid it, I would, but if it was vaccinations or what have you, I would go.

SnoozyLou · 21/03/2020 18:58

@Bookworm83 There is a thread on here - you should keep your appointments unless you hear otherwise.

iVampire · 21/03/2020 19:00

You’ve reminded me that I was called up for routine mammogram, and the appointment is in a couple of weeks.

I’ve not heard from them about rescheduling - I’d better ring them on Monday to find out what they’re doing,

WreckTangled · 21/03/2020 19:02

Baby immunisations and midwife appointments are considered essential just expect screening questions prior to attending and probably a temperature check too

Menora · 21/03/2020 19:04

This will be changing very quickly

All services have been sent out info late last week as to what is essential face to face and what isn’t. What isn’t will either have to wait or be done by phone. Baby imms has been deemed as essential FYI

Sidge · 21/03/2020 19:04

@MickeyMoouse I’m a practice nurse. We are doing baby imms as they are time critical and essential.

We’re not doing smears, chronic disease reviews etc. We’re doing contraceptive reviews over the phone and electronic prescribing. We don’t let anyone in the building if it’s not essential.

Selfsettling3 · 21/03/2020 19:06

I’m sure I’ve chipped a tooth or tooth filling. I’m not sure if I should go to the dentist.

FATEdestiny · 21/03/2020 19:08

My daughter got told to go to her contraceptive pill review appointment yesterday.

Also DH was told at attend his dentist appointment- follow up after treatment st last appointments.

Both these I'd have considered non essential and would have expected them to be cancelled.

emmathedilemma · 21/03/2020 19:11

i went to a physio appointment earlier in the week but they closed last night and are offering phone / online consultations now. My sports massage guy has also closed as of last night although I think once everyone has worked from home at their dodgy kitchen tables he'll probably be back in business quite quickly!!

FATEdestiny · 21/03/2020 19:11

I have a Facebook friend who's a dental assistant (not actually a dentist). She is claiming full essential NHS staff status. On that basis, I'm expecting dental surgeries to be working as normal.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 21/03/2020 19:12

I have a physio appointment on Monday.
I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome and suspected arthritis. I fully intend to attend.

Felicitycity · 21/03/2020 19:12

No. I won't be going to my optician appointment and have cancelled physio for a non urgent problem.

LonginesPrime · 21/03/2020 19:17

@GrumpyHoonMain if it helps at all, my DS had that surgery at 10 months (to coincide with another surgery to minimise the GAs).

It is frustrating though - we've had all sorts of ops and procedures postponed, including the fitting of DS's braces, which took him literally years to agree to in the first place!

I'm a tad concerned about how this is going to mess up the ops he needs to have after his teeth are sorted as he gets discharged at 21 - I can't see how they've got enough time to fit in everything before then if we lose this year. But I guess it can't be helped.

NoraEphronsneck · 21/03/2020 19:49

My dental surgery has cancelled NHS appointments but keep his private patients open Confused

BiteyShark · 21/03/2020 19:56

I did a non essential doctors appointment by phone on Friday rather than attend face to face.

I have a dental checkup next week. I am the first appointment of the day so tempered to go but plan to phone up and ask them if they are still open.
