Risk from delivered newspapers and post?

I've read that Coronavirus can live on cardboard (and so presumably paper) for 24 hours. I guess this means there's a slight risk from post and newspaper deliveries. Would it be best to leave it a day before touching them or would that be totally over the top?

It’s undetectable on cardboard after 8 hours

Open post. Put envelope in bin. Wash hands?

Lllot5 · 21/03/2020 17:42

I didn’t even think of this. My mum is in a warden controlled flat. Just been told no visitors, and I’ve asked everyone to write to her instead.

Emma - good point. That one's easy then.
Newspapers though: leave a day before reading?

Starbuck 8 hours is better! Safe to read in the evening then...

Lllot get her to do what Emma suggests! (unless someone else comes along and says there's no real risk, which is what I was hoping...)

See this: "Royal Mail won't say if postman with coronavirus went on round before finding out he had disease".

If they were open it wouldn't be so bad but to hide the info just makes everyone suspicious and worried.

I've put a plastic tub in the porch, and letters can drop straight in there, put parcels in too, leave till next day at least then deal with them, packaging straight out to bin, contents wiped, hands washed.

GinnyStrupac · 21/03/2020 18:04

I am handling all the post, then washing hands. DCs are strictly forbidden now to run to the letterbox. Same with the milk delivery - I am taking it in, wiping the bottle and washing hands - we have had a note from our milkman advising this. (Vulnerable family member at home here).

I was interested to read pps saying the virus lasts for 8 hours. I had read it was up to 72 hours on surfaces, so I obviously need to do more research on this. Any reliable source links anyone?

starrysimon · 21/03/2020 18:05

I got Farmfoods and various other business advertisement leaflets delivered from the postie yesterday. God knows how many people had handled them in the morning before they got put through my letterbox. I made a Hmm face at the fact that there’s really no need in time like this. Post should only be delivered if necessary, no junk mail.

Thanks for the info about it only lasting 8 hours!

Open post. Put envelope in bin. Wash hands?

Same here.

Post being quarantined here, three days in a series of shoeboxes. We give it a quick glance to check it's not urgent first.

cologne4711 · 21/03/2020 18:32

Definitely need to stop all the cold calling and leaflets. There was a post on here today about someone abused by a cold caller. Just leave people alone.

Inkpaperstars · 21/03/2020 22:18

I would have guessed that removing the front/back cover of the paper lessens risk greatly. Would still wash hands after reading though.

EightNineTen · 21/03/2020 22:33

I carry post through to kitchen and open over recycling container, then tip straight in. My post is usually junk. Packages get same treatment. I washed something wrapped in plastic today! Other things I dispose of all outer bits that might have been handled recently and tip what's inside out. Then dispose, wash hands before handling contents.

I'm more careful than I was just a few days ago, because of all the crazy fuckers who don't care.
