To blame supermarkets for empty shelves late on?

hotcrunchybiscuit · 21/03/2020 17:15

We've been in this situation long enough to know that some people cannot get to the store until late. Why are they still arriving at supermarkets and finding empty shelves?

We are being told it is due to panic buying so if that is the case, can they not hold back and stagger the times the food goes on the shelves instead of relying on people playing fair, which obviously isn't happening?

They already have special hours for certain people so you hold food back for this special hour, no?

There is no issue that they will be left with food not sold in this current climate is there?

I agree, I am now wondering why they cannot stock throughout the day. It only seems to be manic in the mornings? If there is enough stock for everyone, get the stock out.

Bargebill19 · 21/03/2020 17:55

Starbucks - exactly. And well said.

Starbuck8419 · 21/03/2020 17:56

Exactly! Its the classic Ricky gervais thing where we live in a society reminding you not to rape 🙄😂

hotcrunchybiscuit · 21/03/2020 17:56

People shouldn’t be stockpiling crap they don’t need

But they are!

@Bargebill19 👍🏻 Got to try and appreciate what companies and people are doing. Not moan at them considering they shouldn’t even be working either really.

Starbuck8419 · 21/03/2020 17:57

Yes but it’s not the supermarkets responsibility to stop them.

Cameron2012 · 21/03/2020 17:59

Shops are having special shopping times for pensioners and the NHS.
On a personal note please can people stop touching the team on the shop floors arm and shoulders when they want to talk to them and give us some space. I have spent years in store work and have never felt as vulnerable on the shop floor as I do now.
We are working incredibly hard with long hours, by the time I get to shop there is nothing left either.
And for pities sake please stop blaming us for the shortages and moaning about toilet paper and eggs.

Willow2017 · 21/03/2020 18:00

Supermarket staff are working thier asses off to.keep restocking shelves as and when deliveries come in. Shelves are emptying ad fast as we fill them.
But yes blame us for the gigantic increase in purchasing by the general public.
People are having to buy more due to isolating, kids at home, wfh etc. Even with restrictions on things we cannot keep up with demand.
Where the hell do you suppose we can keep all this stock back?
How long for?
We have had 7- 8 tills going non stop all day every day who should we keep stock back for?
How do we know someone needs it more?

We already have given.out free loo rolls to pensioners who need them. Staff have taken it on themselves to contacted frantic mums who need nappies or formula when we get a delivery.

Checkout staff don't know when a delivery will arrive exactly, we dont know what's in it.

Wtf do people expect us to do?

Menora · 21/03/2020 18:01

This is a really pointless and shit thread to be honest

Why don’t you email Tesco’s with all your concerns and helpful suggestions OP - it isn’t like they have a logistics team working overtime or anything. And you can tell them that it isn’t the fault of the public as we all have primitive brains and can’t be expected not to panic Biscuit

Bargebill19 · 21/03/2020 18:02

Starbucks, is it me or are some people really thinking that supermarket shelves work like star treks replicators? (Wanders off to make a coffee for DH who’s doing 15 hr shifts delivering to stores as wtd has been relaxed again)

Menora · 21/03/2020 18:02

I’m NHS and trying my Tesco tomorrow for some bits but I am not holding out much hope that other non NHS people will be behaving themselves, they will turn up as well and bloody queue up making it worse for us, and expecting people to try to get in anyway, without ID and be absolutely vile.

Starbuck8419 · 21/03/2020 18:03

This needs reporting because essentially it’s quite offensive to those working in the stores. “You could do better” mentality. “I take no responsibility.” 🙄🙄

hotcrunchybiscuit · 21/03/2020 18:04

Yes but it’s not the supermarkets responsibility to stop them

No, it's not, it's down to the public to control themselves but it is not happening.

Supermarkets are already controlling to an extent by cutting down on how many of each item you can buy which I think is fantastic.

We're in a situation where we have to think of new ways to cope with what's happening and act upon it quickly, especially when it comes to people starving.

I already said I am IN NO WAY criticising the people in the store or any person in particular at all.

We restock all the chill cabinets in the mornings. You wouldn't believe how much there is to restock!
Staff cannot restock everything else until We get a delivery. There is no giant warehouse full of food hiding at the back of a supermarket!

Willow2017 · 21/03/2020 18:09

Btw its manic all day it never stops!

dany174 · 21/03/2020 18:11

It's not even just the stockpiles, it's everyone who is buy just a little bit extra just in case.
Supermarkets are stocked to minimise waste but have no empty shelfs. So maybe 10% extra then they predict to sell. So if 15% of people buy 1 extra bag of pasta we already have a problem. Then people see empty shelfs of pasta so 20% of people want an extra bag of rice and caned tomatoes just incase.

Only buy what you normally buy. If you need to go in self isolation, ask a friend, family member, neighbor or co worker to bring you shipping. Share delivery slots. Buy sensible, don't buy more than you normally do.

Bargebill19 · 21/03/2020 18:11

Well I suppose an easy way to stop people from buying so much is simply to remove all the supermarket trollies, and limit it to one person/one basket.
Bet that wouldn’t be popular either ..... but very effective against the selfish idiots.

SeptemberWeddingIHope · 21/03/2020 18:12

Supermarkets are not the problem selfish arseholes who stockpile or sell loo roll for £20 online are

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/03/2020 18:13

This isn’t like preparing for Christmas or any other busy time. People are not going to work, school, social clubs or restaurants. All the food that they would have consumed there is having to be bought by consumers for cooking at home. It’s a MASSIVE amount of extra stuff that we now need to get from supermarkets instead so it is very difficult for staff to cope with, i’m Sure.

hotcrunchybiscuit · 21/03/2020 18:13

I apologise wholeheartedly if it comes across that I criticising people, I truly am not.

My title could have bee more sensitive, I do apologise for that.

Blame is the wrong word. I should have asked if 'supermarkets could work differently' to solve this problem.

We need to pull together not turn on eachother. I do not mean to offend anyone and am sorry if I have.

Focalpoint · 21/03/2020 18:15

In Dublin, supermarket is enforcing social distancing by limiting numbers going in and making you wait outside 1m apart.

So to avoid the queue, using what's in the cupboard and only going once a week with no top up shopping. Empty shelves are a mild inconvenience - there are enough substitutes.

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/03/2020 18:16

The only way to fix this is to close Amazon and Ebay’s marketplaces and disable selling via Facebook.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 21/03/2020 18:16

We are putting stock out throughout the day. Our shelves can not hold the amount of delivery we’ve been having. We’ve been constantly restocking.

We’ve had to draft in extra security as the colleagues who are replenishing are in physical danger. They’re being pushed shoved and abused. As are our checkout staff.

My colleagues and I have been sworn at, threatened, spat at etc. We’re doing our best. The entire company are doing their best.

Don’t blame us. Blame the animals who are coming through again and again. The families coming together and all taking separate trollies and checking out individually.

I’m not as frightened of getting Corona virus as I am of being assaulted by our customers.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 18:17

In an area my friend lives in, they aren’t restocking much during opening hours.
They walk out with a trolley of food, and vultures descend.
The ones that are lucky enough to make it to the shelf face abuse from customers.

It’s bad enough in some stores when they start reducing stuff on a normal day.

And you also have to remember a lot of these staff live near to that store. One wrong word to the wrong twat and potentially it creates a bigger issue. I really don’t blame staff for saying nothing.

Stores are doing what they can do. It’s your friends, family, neighbours etc that are the issue. And the sooner they wake up the better it will be for all of us.

I for one would prefer to be able to do my usual shopping without the army overlooking things.

One thing is certain, my friend list is getting culled.
