Keyworkers childcare fees

I'm after some advice.

Before I begin, I really do emphasise with all at this unprecedented time. I'm a lone parent key worker and i want to stay home during this time with my child 4yrs but can't. I'm not sure it's fair that certain key workers should have to work. I'm a police officer so fully accept that i have to.
My son's nursery has closed its branch and offered one further away or has said that he doesn't have to attend and i don't have to pay. But if the gov are saying us key workers have to work, Surely this would mean they will pay my nursery fees? After all I am putting myself at risk and my son also for still sending him nursery.

I literally have no support as my dad is in isolation for health conditions and my mum is a nhs nurse.

This has not been clarified can someone sign post me to the answer. Thanks

Tricky situation OP!

Contact work to explain, write to your MP,

@Ruebin

Thanks not to those who say we signed up to this. No one signed up to corona virus.

Sorry to say but you did sign up to this when you joined the police. Whilst you may not have envisaged this individual set of circumstances (not many of us apart from Bill Gates did), it is what police regulations is designed to deal with...an exigency off duty.

So whilst I feel for the position you are in, and eternally grateful for what you and other front line emergency services workers are dealing with, there are also others in far worse positions. I don't envisage your force will be offering to pay your childcare

Your update makes things a bit clearer. Speak to your employer about it. Explain about the extra cost. Maybe they'll reduce your hours slightly.

FYI I'm a key worker, my husband is vulnerable. I'll be taking annual leave then unpaid parental leave so we're all at home. I suspect I'll still have to pay my nursery bill.

OP, contact your local schools with nurseries and beg. Schools do have some flexibility.

Op I'm a police response sergeant. I feel for you as a single mum. My DH is NHS so we're struggling too but at least we have the option to work around each other so always someone home.

Have you spoken to your supervision? I'm currently working an emergency flexi plan, albeit I'm making my hours up elsewhere. I'm being told by supervision that flexibility is the key with regards to childcare. I know if you were in my team, I'd rather you work the 20 hours than go off completely.

Hi,

If it helps this is what I am doing.

I’m a teacher- I normally work Monday-Wednesday, with grandparents doing care on a Monday and then nursery Tuesdays and Wednesdays for my two.

So I can offer Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the current situation as the nursery will have my children I can work. I couldn’t offer another day as I couldn’t afford the extra childcare.

I do expect to pay for the childcare as usual as I am still on my full wage, however my husbands job is in question (he is a new starter on a probation period). If they don’t renew his probation period and he loses his job we might have to think again about the fees. (And all our other bills, mortgage etc)

Hope that helps. Don’t get yourself in Financial trouble. X
