How is takeaway safe?

My husband and daughter want a takeaway tonight. I know this is being allowed by the government but how is it safe? Surely you can catch it from touching the outer packaging and containers ? Or am I wrong?

My view is that I'm not trying to not be infected, but reduce ways that I can pass it on.

If having a couple of takeaways delivered means I need to go out less then that's not a bad thing IMO. The delivery person isnt at any risk leaving it on the doorstep.

It's all a risk, you can't expect people to stay home and not eat takeaways etc plus food is hard to get atm and we need some pleasures ( self isolating atm with 3 men!)
It's an impossible situation.
I feel for people but carrying on like they are is life threatening. I'm really upset!

@DitheringDoris

What is your source re. gastro issues and the virus being carried in faeces? I haven’t read/heard anything about that and if it is the case, why isn’t it being put out on all the info about the symptoms?

If you're uncomfortable about the packaging, blast the whole lot in the oven before serving it.

Itsjustmee · 22/03/2020 19:57

Anyone seen the film Contagion it’s shows you right at the end that the pig who was slaughtered for food in the restaurant was being cleaned by the chef who then had his photo taken with the lovely Miss Paltrow who then died shortly afterwards ( the chef also died )
I’ll be passing on takeaways for a while
I know it’s only a bloody film before anyone mentions that. But it’s a bit to close to home for me Hollywood or not 😞

He had pizza tonight which we collected. The server took the pizza out of the oven on the big shovel thing and to went straight in the box. He put on fresh gloves from a box then closed it up. I figure the oven would kill any bacteria beforehand

Nothing is safe. You could leave your house and get hit by a bus. I actually think a takeaway from a trusted restaurant is safer than shopping in a supermarket. I was within inches of about 30 people just in a Tesco local on Saturday, and I had to visit three supermarkets to get the food we needed plus another four market shops. If I was going to catch it then it would be in one of those supermarkets, not from a takeaway.
If you don't want to order a takeaway, don't. No one is forcing you.

Ilovemypantry · 22/03/2020 20:06

@YappityYapYap

Surely wearing disposable gloves to the supermarket is not without risk? You will still be touching contaminated surfaces/items, just that it will be with the gloves instead of your hands and you could still touch your face with the gloves on.

There’s something that doesn’t sit well with me:

Who are all these chefs who have covid symptoms but are at work sneezing on food?

Pubs and restaurants already adhere to stringent hygiene practices, if you’d eat in there pre covid why wouldn’t you during? Far less human contact than taking a ready meal out of the fridge at Sainsbury’s!

brendansbuddy · 22/03/2020 20:28

Just as safe, or safer than buying supermarket food, as so many people outline above. We are all touching all sorts of things, and getting very close to people, by shopping for food. The chances of a chef sneezing on your meal once it's cooked, are way slimmer. We need some sort of infrastructure to remain when this is all over, and supporting these businesses when the risks are probably lower than many other activities we are all still doing, is vital. I really wouldn't worry about it.
