Got a thermometer when eldest was born 10 years ago as he caught strep throat as a tiny baby and ended up in hospital with a temperature of 41.1. I didn’t know it was that high, had called an ambulance as he had a febrile seizure, they told us we must have a thermometer in the house. I now also have a pulse oximeter as the same dc has asthma and recurrent croup so I like to know how his oxygen levels are doing as I’ve taken him to gp mid asthma attack and they’ve not checked them. Was only £15 on Amazon.

No, the rule is a persistent cough and/or a high temperature. Not everyone with COVID-19 has a temperature! I've had it for 2 weeks, horrendous cough and chest pain, breathing difficulties but temperature only spiking and never higher than 37.8.

You body temperature of course fluctuates during the day and if you are on your period, your body temperature is generally higher than normal. I think 37.8 or over is considered high. The following advice from NHS UK website

"a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
•a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)"

My body temperature is very low when I'm well, it varies between 36.5 and 36.8, maybe at the most 37. It's never been above normal apart from when I'm very bad.

elizabethdraper · 23/03/2020 14:53

My body temp is always around 37.5

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 23/03/2020 14:57

@elizabethdraper, your temp is within range for normal.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 23/03/2020 15:01

There is a range for normal human body temp and of course it varies depending on the technique of the person taking the temp and the site the measurement is taken from (ear, mouth, rectal, armpit, groin etc). 36.5 falls within normal range.

I bought one 18 years ago when I had my first child I still have it

I am actually ill so have obviously been taking my own temperature
Mine has been low around 35.7-36.4 and I have felt cold the last few days but I got a 37.2 from it last night and I noticed I felt much worse

Mittens030869 · 23/03/2020 15:11

I know 36.5 is within normal range; normal range is 36 up to 37.3, we studied that when we dealt with our DDs' childhood illnesses.

Mittens030869 · 23/03/2020 15:12

There was a freak temperature of 35.8 a week ago, but the next morning it was back to my normal body temperature.
