Are car mechanics key workers?

The key worker list states under Transport 'those that will keep air, water, road and rail passenger and freight transport operating'.

Should the garages - ie those that fix cars, etc - stay open as they might fall under this description?

A friend owns a small family-owned garage and has full diaries of work/MOTs/services with breakdowns arriving as well. He believes he should stay open, with his 3 employees, as long as they still can get car parts.

Any views?

The list of keyworkers is to define who's children can still go to school not to define who can work.

It's up to him if he stays open at 5his point. That may change but it's only leisure type businesses like gyms, museums, restaurants, bars that have been told to close so far.

Not sure really but having some garages open makes sense. NHS workers need to get to work and need their cars to run. Delivery trucks need to run to get food into shops so they need to be repaired, MOT’d etc. Ambulances need to run, people working in supermarkets need to get to work too. Even people needing to use public transport will need to be on buses that are running. So mechanics will still be needed. Maybe not all of them but there is still a need to keep everything flowing.

I know that all driving tests have been cancelled but key workers can still go ahead with theirs if they phone up the special helpline the DVLA has listed.

You're mixing up two things OP - the list of key workers is relevant to who can send their children to school, not which business need to close. A garage owner may not count as a key worker but he hasn't been instructed to close.

Plus in rural areas people still need their cars to get to the grocery shop or chemist. Ditto people who need to go to essential non coronovirus medical treatment like pregnant women and those having cancer or dialysis treatment.

I live 10 miles froma shop. Screwed if my car doesn't work or can't get fuel. The garages should be allowed to continue working. If I was a vital front line NHS worker it would be farcial if I couldn't get to work if my needed an hour's work.

Should retail garages - car dealerships close?
Our franchise has suggested we take cars to people's homes so they can test drive Hmm
I think servicing a car can be put back a month or two, the car's warranty shouldn't be affected and will have something in place for this, surely?

I'm a part-time teacher and therefore a key worker, but I also work in a garage, where I don't think I should be.

anothernotherone · 22/03/2020 11:51

Everyone is a key worker according to Boris.

pinkrocker · 22/03/2020 12:14

WTF. I can understand that a car may need repairing IF it's required to get to work and you can't work from home, but servicing & warranty work can absolutely wait.

My Dh is still open, he doesn't employ anyone. He's closed the reception area and customers on the whole are being considerate. He's booked up for weeks, it's all essential repairs not services. Lots of our customers are community carers and nurses, we're fairly rural.
All he can do is wear gloves at all times and use anti bac endlessly.

MimiLaRue · 22/03/2020 12:21

Not officially but they definitely are. If NHS workers cant get access to MOTs or their cars fixed they wont be able to go to work, esp if they work in the community and bus routes are scaled down. Not to mention, it would be best for as few people to use public transport as possible. Car travel is much safer and less likely to infect others.

pinkrocker · 22/03/2020 13:08

I agree, repairs only. I'm hoping we are given some guidelines for MOT testing.
