Should I feel guilty for working at home?

More than 95% of my job can be done from home. The other 5% isn't applicable at the moment because most of my workplace has shut down, so if I was going in to the office I would be travelling in just to do exactly what I could have done at home as the people I would need to speak to are not around.

Our HR department has said all office based staff who can work at home should do so from next week. However my manager, who only manages me, questioned me on why I want to work from home when I asked to yesterday, and asked if I will have enough to do. She behaved as if I'm doing it just to slack. She said some people will still be around the office so I could still come in as they are.

I am not a key worker in a public services industry and don't need to be there physically. It's making me feel guilty if I do work from home. I should add my husband falls in the vulnerable category due to an underlying health problem.

I’m in the same boat as you, although I have a 11yr old child who now isn’t at school so I have no choice but to be at home. My company are allowing two days a week home working, but all other days I am being made to take as unpaid parental leave despite being able to do 99% of my job from home. I hope the govt announcement means they can pay me 80% of wages because as it stands I could lose half my earnings. My partner is working from home on some days but his job is too important to homeschool my son. I have been made to feel like I am completely taking the mick, so I can totally see what you mean about feeling guilty! We should be able to prioritise the health and lives of our loved ones and of course our own well-being too! Stick to your guns, the govt advice is to stay at home if you can so I would speak to your HR dept again and explain you need to self isolate and work from home due to your other half’s health conditions.

I would tell her to speak to HR. Surely if they have said you should work from home, your manager should be allowing that.
