I am meant to have a blood test for diabetes. Can I still go to the hospital or are they closed for stuff like that?

My local hospital has cancelled outpatient appointments and tests; only A&E is available.

CappyCapCap · 21/03/2020 11:10

Our trust is doing them.

A colleague had her blood test yesterday. Her husband had a camera down his throat last week.

Dp has had confirmation that 2 appointments are still going next week, along with covid advice (like dont attend if you have symptoms, wash hands, come alone if possible etc).

Obviously we are also aware if gets worse they could be cancelled.

i have an out patients appointment for monday - i have been told not to go to the hospital but the consultant is ringing me at my appointment time which seems like a good idea

I asked a doctor friend this very question about an hour ago on behalf of my mother-in-law. She was horrified at the thought of people coming anywhere near a hospital for anything other than genuine emergencies and directed me to listen to Dr Jack on LBC via YouTube - sobering stuff and she 100% agrees with everything he says.

I know I think the same about not using the hospital, I was meant to have it at my doctors, but they cancelled it and said use the hospital. I had diabetes in pregnancy and I'm due to be checked. I have had the form a few weeks, as it's one I need to fast for and so I can't do it on preschool run days as I have a long walk to do first. Obviously no preschool now, but I'd have to take my son too. Really hard to know as obviously I could have diabetes for months unchecked if I don't go.

This might help however you're not yet diagnosed diabetic so I'm not certain that you fall into that category. I would phone the hospital and ask them. I'm when did you have your baby? Is this your first annual test since having them? If it was me I would probably look at my last result and then make the decision ie if it was completely normal I would be happy to leave it but if it was on the higher side of normal I would want it checked.

My dad's routine eye-clinic appointment seem to be continuing. He went last week and given another appointment for four weeks' time.

MrsAmaro · 21/03/2020 13:35

My trust has started an online booking system for bloods, presumably to avoid a full waiting room. Check the hospital website most are furiously updating them to keep everyone informed.

My baby is 11 weeks so doctor said check between 10-12 weeks postpartum

Diabetes is serious. Ring the hospital and check.

hobag82 · 21/03/2020 15:26

My husband has been called today to say his colonoscopy for suspected cancer under the 2 week cancer pathway has been cancelled and they will contact us when they can offer another. Very worrying but at least he hadn't already started the moviprep with the toilet roll shortage 🙂

WreckTangled · 21/03/2020 17:22

Op yes I would go to that appointment it's important to check things are back to normal for you.

Makinganewthinghappen · 21/03/2020 17:27

We had a letter today cancelling our sons occupational therapy appointment. The letter said all nonessential appointments are cancelled - but a blood test for suspected diabetes - I would try to get to if you can.

CherryPavlova · 21/03/2020 17:29

Ring and ask.

I work in a hospital. We are trying to change our processes very quickly to reduce the risk to patients. We have suspended all but essential face to face outpatient appointments in my hospital. Patients are being contacted by a clinician for review and to advise on a plan. Where we do have to bring patients in we are trying to limit contact as much as possible eg.by giving people exact times to attend and spacing the clinics out. we are still doing cancer and emergency work including operations

Blood tests are fine
