How long will the supermarket madness go on?

theneverendinglaundry · 21/03/2020 10:28

This is my main worry. I can get my head around social distancing, the kids being off school, as long as we have a roof over our head and we can eat.

How much longer can people go on panic buying? Or will the government have to step in and give everyone rations?

Seriously even those with massive chest freezers must be full by now??!

Why is loo roll not available now that it is limited to a certain amount pp ? You would think that they would have caught up by now ! We will run out soon, with four of us at home all the time, and we can’t go out to shop as I am at higher risk. I am hoping that it will come in my delivery, but day by the things in my delivery are being marked as unavailable. A week to go. Do things ever become available again, or once they are down as unavailable, is that it, even though presumably new stock will be in by then ?

Marieo · 21/03/2020 11:55

It's definitely slowing down here, but there is a large elderly population, and lots of them have been doing their shopping in order to start isolating as per the guidance so it will vary elsewhere I imagine.

frillyfarmer · 21/03/2020 11:56

We are farmers supplying two national supermarket chains. There is absolutely no disruption to supply chains - this isn't the war, there is no opposition sinking boats full of food.

This is just small minded people and the media creating a genuine shitstorm. Hopefully once the "lockdown" starts people will be too terrified to leave the house and dining on their tinned goods and shitrolls.

In the meantime, support your local independents - butchers, bakers, veg man, milk man. We don't need supermarkets, honestly.

InglouriousBasterd · 21/03/2020 11:57

I’m SI so asked my ex to grab some milk and bread as my milkman didn’t deliver - he went to Sainsbury’s and said they had everything, including tinned tomatoes! So hopefully improving

lilmishap · 21/03/2020 12:00

It's settled where I am today, but there's still those waiting for payday, the week after next.

BiarritzCrackers · 21/03/2020 12:03

I had to buy a microwave yesterday, and because of the freezer thing, I felt a bit self conscious...

Supermarkets will just be a soup of disease. Everyone going to multiple shops every day, because they can only get a few things in each.

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 21/03/2020 12:06

I think supermarkets should lock the trolleys away. Baskets only.

Worriedaboutundiagnosed · 21/03/2020 12:07

I have an online delivery coming today. Lots of things are unavailable. No toilet roll, no pasta, no sugar. Tons of stuff substituted.

We'll manage one way or another, but if this goes on, I think the government may need to step in with some sort of rationing. We're self isolating due to underlying health conditions in the family, so can't go and join the 6am supermarket queues even if we were inclined to do so.

I hope it calms down soon.

eddiemairswife · 21/03/2020 12:08

At least during the war we didn't run out of toilet paper.

BeetrootRocks · 21/03/2020 12:10

Clicked the link and had to laugh at the very very orderly queue!

Yes rest is bad but that was funny, we've not gone to the dogs just yet!

Atleastthedoglovesme · 21/03/2020 12:11

There wasn't any toilet paper in war times

Frequency · 21/03/2020 12:16

It's not slowing down here but we started late. When panic buying and empty shelves were first on the news our town was business as normal. We started a few days ago. Iceland had a security guard in the bread section yesterday.

What gets me uis no-one will admit to panic buying, so if no-one is panic buying where is all the bread and loo roll and pasta and meat? The security guard told me Iceland are getting two deliveries per day as opposed to their one every other day and yet the shelves and freezers are still bare.

I don't understand. There is no supply issue. Even if we are locked down we're still allowed out to food shop. Why are people doing this? Why are they being so selfish and wasteful?

SilverySurfer · 21/03/2020 12:30

Just spoken to a friend who went to Tescos earlier and apparently there was a woman trying to buy 10 joints of meat and 24 big bottles of milk. They stopped her and she gave them a mouthful and they barred her which I think we will see more of in the coming weeks if people continue to be so utterly selfish.

BeetrootRocks · 21/03/2020 12:32

Quite right too surfer

They've not had this in Italy Spain but have in USA Australia, there must be cultural differences I guess, bit depressing to realise that our mindset as a country is not inevitable so why are we like this

eddiemairswife · 21/03/2020 12:37

Yes there was at least. It wasn't soft or quilted, but made good tracing paper. The makes I remember were Bronco (pale brown in colour) and Izal (smelt slightly medicated).

Paperdollss · 21/03/2020 12:40

I hope it calms down soon, I had a click and collect a week and a half ago before it got really bad and luckily only had a few items substituted.
I think we’ve got enough here to last a fortnight(with interesting meals) but then we’ll be back to nothing and I’m worried about not being able to replace what we’ve eaten.
On a low income and on my own with 2 children so don’t really want to be dragging them around different shops trying to find stuff Confused

NotDisclosedToday · 21/03/2020 12:45

Forever unless they take some severe action. Limit peoples spending to £100 and a maximum of 2 of each product. Im sorry but if you have a big family then go around twice.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 21/03/2020 12:50

I wish moderators of local town Facebook pages would ban people from posting pictures of empty shelves in supermarkets and the constant asking what Asda/Tesco is like.

It just creates more panic in people.

sundowners · 21/03/2020 12:50

I think its greed but also sorry to say the gormless faces of those in the queue seems to me its becoming like a competition /prestige/winning thing- even if they dont truly "NEED" any more stuff, people like that feel as if they are winning and superior to others by getting the last huge pack of bog roll/ cans of soup/pasta.

Its people who truly have something missing from their lives - yet this is finally something they are winning at, and cheating others out of.
I truly believe its this bizarre mentality that is spurring this on. And I go to that Tesco in question, so believe me I've seen these people.

LASH38 · 21/03/2020 13:04

I went Lidl’s yesterday afternoon and bar a total lack of toilet paper, meat, pasta and rice it was well stocked. Lots of bread, veg, fruit, milk.

The new crowd control man was twiddling his thumbs. And I didn’t have to queue to be served.

It was quieter than even normal and this is inner London.

Asda carpark was quieter than normal too as I drive past.

So I suspect that the stockpilers are sorted Smile

For the record, I was doing a normal 20quid shop for the next few days. Meat would have been nice but I’ve a lovely bit of sea bass instead.

NonUrinatInVentum · 21/03/2020 13:09

We're on Day 7 here in France and there's plenty in the shops. No empty shelves, no queuing and no panic buying. The day before lockdown I queued for an hour outside my local Carrefour but all was calm inside, no empty shelves. Once the initial panic passes it will settle down but I'm shocked at the pure selfishness shown!

AnnaMagnani · 21/03/2020 13:19

My DM rang me in a panic as when she went to the shops in the week they were barren.

However her friend went out for her today to Lidl and apart from no bread, apparently everything else was there.

I was in London yesterday and the massive Sainsbury's was empty but walked past 8 fully stocked Asian grocers on my way to a meeting (yes I am a key worker before anyone says I shouldn't have been out). Plus a v dubious looking shop with a sign saying they had hand santizer - suspect it had either fallen off a van or they had made it themselves but it was more than Boots had.

Local mini-supermarkets also much better stocked than big shops.

Flaxmeadow · 21/03/2020 13:23

Some of these panic shoppers are actually profiteers.
The same kind of black market criminals, AKA 'Spivs', who in WW2 hoarded items and then raised prices for sale

theneverendinglaundry · 21/03/2020 13:24

Its comforting to hear that things are calming down in some areas. It was still nuts here this morning (Herts).

I have a delivery booked for Monday which I will edit tomorrow (ocado wont let me on the site until then) so I need to get my brain in gear and plan for the week ahead as much as possible.

a maximum of 2 of each product.

Sainsbury's started this a few days ago, and it has just made things worse.

People are trying to walk out with full
baskets and trolleys (full of alcohol, so essentialsHmm) without paying where my dp works. The customers are abusing staff constantly, pushing each other out of the way. The store opened early today, and staff have had their hours changed at 2 days notice.

Yesterday, they put out 2 days worth of delivery and by 6pm the shelves were bare.

They need to start letting people in 20, maybe 30 at a time, with an item limit. Let the rest wait for hours.

The people doing this are just appalling.

My dp is absolutely drained, as are the rest of the workers I'm sure. If it's not corona that gets them, it will be a mental breakdown
