I've just been laid off and employer refusing to apply for the grant

Oh my, I'm probably in the same boat as lots of other people. I just had a call from my manager to say that I'm being laid off along with other employees. She said that the bosses are refusing to apply for the government grant where the government pay 80% of employees wage that have been laid off or don't have work. I'm in bits. I don't know what to do. I guess my question is 1) can I get a holding hand and 2) how do I contact HMRC to ask them what to do if employer is refusing to claim the grant?

Love to all that are in a similar situation Thanks

It's up to the employer, you cannot force them.

Many will not have the cash flow to make this work, or may be winding the business up.

Sorry

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep unfortunately, I know that they have the cash flow as I work in the finance department. Sad

The new government grant is very new. They may not have had time to think it through and there is a chance they could change their minds?

Wtfdoipick · 21/03/2020 09:41

I think a lot of people misunderstand this 80%, it's being paid to companies if they want to claim it so they can retain staff they would otherwise let go. It's still going to cost a company money I suspect with pension contributions and ni contributions. However if they decide to let them go anyway there is nothing you can do. I'm so sorry for your job loss,

My worry is that a lot of zero hours workers in the hospitality and retail sector will simply not be given work, as there is no redundancy process to go through with them (unless they have gained contractual rights through custom and practice)

The nicer employers may wish to keep them on the books, not sure if the 80% would be applied to average earnings, but some may just take advantage of the zero hours to do simply that, give them zero hours.

Yes, I am in hospitality too.well, was Grin

And a lot of workers are on what I'd call 'minimal hours plus zero' where they get a really low amount of contracted hours, eg hours per week pus the rest on o/time. I'm sure the 80% will only be applied to the contracted hours so they'll still be a lot worse off. We need to see the details really. I work in HR so watching with interest.

Well I hate to tell you this but the Gvt Grant is currently a load of bolllocks.

They have not set up the admin or mechanism to do it, they announced it before telling the councils that they are expecting will carry it out, and the councils haven’t got the cash.

It is grandstanding bollocks from the Bollock in Chief.

My friends business is about to go under after days trying to
Pursue the promised grant, then loan... blah blah, round in circles and trapped in bureaucratic dead ends.

It is a scandal that the gvt behave so dishonestly and irresponsibly.

So sorry for your circumstances AngrySad

They may change their minds once they’ve looked into it but I’d start applying to your local supermarkets, they’re taking on a lot of staff quickly.

Frankie wasn't the grant only announced last night? And available from Monday?
