Do you think the non essiantail shops will be closed next week?

Hi now with all bars/restaurants/cafes all shut down, do you think all the non essiantail shops will be closed by next weekend?

I work in a dry cleaners so pretty sure that's not an essiantail job. I'm currently on day 2 of self isolation as my husband and I have symptoms. If my work gets shut down I'd like to try and get a temp job in tesco/Aldi or offer to deliver goods from local shops etc when i can safely leave the house. Anyone else thinking of doing the same?

I would hope so, we are on track to go the way of Italy, and the sooner we contain it, the better chance we have.

Idiots will still go out while the option is there sadly, you can only stop it by making it enforced.

Fatted · 21/03/2020 08:56

A lot of them have closed already because of the drop in customers. Lots closed their doors yesterday.

PapercraftNinja · 21/03/2020 08:56

My company have reduced staff in all retail outlets and closed 2 stores. Non essential stores, and are repairing for closure of all.

PapercraftNinja · 21/03/2020 08:57

Sorry preparing

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 21/03/2020 08:59

My boss has said we are to stay open until the government shuts us 🙄 I'm glad I (maybe) have the virus now so I can go and help within my community feel so helpless atm

Your job is non essential. You should already be at home even without symptoms.

The govt are covering 80% of your wages now. So stay at home. Do not go back to your non essential job.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 21/03/2020 09:01

I am at home...

@madroid the government are only covering wages for folk who were going to be paid off, it’s a retention scheme as far as I understand it. Will they still cover if your work is open but you don’t go in?

TruffleShuffles · 21/03/2020 09:20

@SnapAndFartAllDayLong dry cleaners have actually been allowed to stay open in Spain. It’s so people who don’t have a washing machine can still keep things clean and if the health care begin to struggle with cleaning all things in house they can use them too.

madroid · 21/03/2020 09:26

That's not true @Sherloidbaisherloid

Rishi Sunak clearly said it is for furloughed staff.ie ones who have been sent home because there's nothing to do.

HMRC will distribute 80% of wage bill from now on backdated to 28 Feb and will be up and running for all no later than end of April.

madroid · 21/03/2020 09:27

If your business is not operating then you can claim. Most businesses should be shut if they are non essential.

dorapicasso · 21/03/2020 09:32

Dry cleaners in Spain are still open.

ThisTimeMine · 21/03/2020 09:33

My employer is non essential, online retailer with office/warehouse. Employer has said we won’t close, infact they are increasing stock and workload to benefit from the increased sales as people self isolate. We are non customer facing, however are at risk from each other and courier drivers. As a non customer facing role it’s unlikely the government will force us to close 😔

Sherloidbaisherloid · 21/03/2020 09:34

@madroid thank you, I stand corrected. Is am hoping I will be entitled to this, work in a non essential shop and I am worried

covetingthepreciousthings · 21/03/2020 09:38

I hope they close non essential shops this weekend to be honest in the next press announcements.

I work in a non essential shop, and I don't believe it's socially responsible at this stage to open. Both to the staff and the customers, putting them in danger.

I have asthma and I'm terrified going in to work, my hands are red raw from over washing. I'm praying we get closed as at the moment we seem to be staying open and no
plans to close unless forced to.

Quite a lot of the independent shops are closing after today where I live as they feel it's no longer safe to continue trading.

Foobydoo · 21/03/2020 09:38

Will they force hairdressers etc to close?
My hairdresser has posted that she is keeping open and deep cleaning each day.
I feel for her as she has just refurbished but she is very wrong to stay open. Such close contact is so risky.

crazydiamond222 · 21/03/2020 09:43

Hair and beauty should be top priority for closure.

I am in two minds about online suppliers of non food items. We are having an extension built atm and having bricks and other building items delivered. The builders are working outside and not in close proximity to each other. I wonder whether it is best for them to stop work and be paid by the government or continue and keep the economy ticking over as best as possible.

Etinox · 21/03/2020 10:15

I think so. I’m dropping off some clothes to the dry cleaners today. I’ll be paying up front and don’t expect to picking them up anytime soon!
