Is there anything I can do - my gym hasn't closed?

I go to classes at a super small, private gym thing (so not a chain or anything, and I do mean super small).

They seem to have decided that they are a fitness provision, not a "gym" so they are still running classes and are open Hmm

I'm naturally a bit of a rule follower and also can't attend anyway, I have vulnerable people in my family, but also I just think that it's so against the spirit of what we're trying to do here??

They've reduced their class sizes and made them 30 mins instead of 60 but otherwise basically going ahead as normal...

I don't want to "be a grass" but their attitude of "whatever, it doesnt apply to us, we are carrying on" is just really frustrating Confused

Fitness provision - gym - I don’t see the difference?!

lemonsandlimes123 · 21/03/2020 08:17

Report them to the local authority they will have a license that can be revoked and then their insurance will be void

katewitch · 21/03/2020 08:19

Who would I even go to in the LA? I have no idea!

I agree report. Do you have an email telling you this that you can forward?

PepePig · 21/03/2020 08:20

You need to report them.

TeddyIsaHe · 21/03/2020 08:20

Their insurance will be void, so they’re idiots.

lemonsandlimes123 · 21/03/2020 08:20

FFS phone them and ask. They have a website, use your common sense.

pennow · 21/03/2020 08:20

Report them. The advice was very clear. Gym's, Leisure centres. The factvtgey choose to remand themselves as a fitness provision means nothing.

katewitch · 21/03/2020 08:21

Dos anyone know who they can be reported to? I've had a brief google this morning but to no avail

I've looked but not found anything about this specific situation that developed as of last night on the local authoritys website, but thank you for the one sarcastic comment.

Police!

sonypony · 21/03/2020 08:23

I guess the council? Or local newspaper usually does the trick round here.

lubeybooby · 21/03/2020 08:24

just ring the general number for the council

onalongsabbatical · 21/03/2020 08:25

Your local authority will have a department called Environmental Health. I'd start there. Definitely the right thing to do, OP.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/03/2020 08:25

I’d contact my local councillor.

katewitch · 21/03/2020 08:26

Ok, I'll try calling the general number then, not sure I'll get much luck until monday but I guess it's worth a try!

Do you have a community Facebook page? You could ask them to post anonymously. A pub near me was outed for being packed out last night and the backlash was huge! Nothing like adverse publicity to make hem sit up and take notice.

meditrina · 21/03/2020 08:31

I wouid suggest the Public Health Department of your local council.

I would also email the 'fitness provider' and ask for written proof that they have contacted their insurer about their intention to remain open despite the Government's ban on opening by all leisure facilities, and their insurer has confirmed in writing that coverage continues.

katewitch · 21/03/2020 08:32

I've just seen a comment from someone else asking "why are you allowed to stay open?" and the owner has said "I am not a gym" meaning she's just a personal trainer who runs classes Hmm

I will definitely try to follow this up, if anyone has a short cut for me/knows where to go though I'm all ears, otherwise I guess its just phoning and emailing around!

Respond saying - "you were a gym last week!"

Ethelswith · 21/03/2020 08:54

Counter example of good practice.

My Pilates class is run by a PT in a community hall.

It's cancelled in usual form, on a 'watch this space' for restarting on a virtual platform. Depending on future government advice, it might re-start in the open air, but not counting on that.

She really shouldn't be opening premises for leisure.

This just goes to show that some people will nitpick t the wording even on something as important as this.

When times normalise, I'd be moving my custom elsewhere
