Nhs and elderly shopping on together at Sainsbury’s! Is this not madness?

olivehater · 21/03/2020 07:17

Just had an email from Sainsbury’s:
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 8am - 9am to serving elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers, as well as NHS and Social Care workers.
Is this not the worst idea ever?
The most vulnerable shopping with the most likely to be infected together!
Would they not be better prioritising their online slots to the elderly?

I dont know the best way round this really, I do feel like the elderly should not be going out to a supermarket at all. Not all elderly will be willing to online shop. I think the point is to get them there when there is some food. If I had an elderly person near me I would offer to go for them, but again encouraging that could lead to people being taken advantage of.

ineedsun · 21/03/2020 07:23

Even if people are willing to shop online, you can't get appointments for love nor money.
Can't remember which supermarket it is. But one of them has (for example) mon weds fri for vulnerable groups and ties weds sat for key workers.

Seems more sensible

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 21/03/2020 07:29

I understood it to be on separate days

PurSav0n · 21/03/2020 07:31

I agree utter madness.

I posted on another thread re school workers as Sainsbury’s is now only open 8-8. 3 early mornings for elderly, care workers and NHS. Aside from mixing the 2 groups you want kept apart what about school staff teaching and caring for key worker children?I tried several shops after work, all stripped bare. If I’m in school I’m in school, also have an elderly parent to shop for. Was told to come back late as lorries arrive late but can’t do that now.

Why are behind the scenes NHS seemed more worthy than those looking after their children?

PurSav0n · 21/03/2020 07:33

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 8am - 9am to serving elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers, as well as NHS and Social Care workers. They will just need to show us their pass or ID when they visit.

definitelygc · 21/03/2020 07:34

Has no one told Sainsbury's that most frontline NHS workers work shifts so many will not be able to go to the supermarket between 8-9am? They should just keep a stockpile of all the essentials for frontline NHS staff so they can shop whenever they have time.

crazydiamond222 · 21/03/2020 07:41

Supermarkets really need to get their act together and support social distancing.

  1. Only letting x number in
  2. Enforcing 2 metre rule with lines on floor
  3. More staff available for click and collect
  4. Have seperate nhs shopping times followed by cleaning to ensure they get food and dont infect others
  5. Elderly hours could be segregated more e.g over 70s rather than over 60s with showing of ID and seperate times for others with health conditions
  6. More enforcement of item limit
GreasyFryUp · 21/03/2020 07:49

I've just had this email. Why the 1m distancing rule? It should be 2.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 21/03/2020 07:52

I think the supermarkets should close to the general public.

The elderly and the NHS then get alternate shopping days. They are still limited to 3 items per customer.
The rest of us have to use online deliveries.

PurSav0n · 21/03/2020 07:52

Wouldn’t the elderly be better doing online, my Sm can’t get a slot.

SRS29 · 21/03/2020 07:54

I really think it’s time for ALL supermarkets to work together. Where possible, one supermarket in a town/city should be dedicated to NHS/key workers only, all day. All this 8am-9am nonsense doesn’t help if your shift finishes at 10am say. Then other supermarkets keep hours for elderly only then rest of the time for other -selfish buyers x

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 21/03/2020 07:55

So how does online delivery only work if you run out of food and have to wait weeks for a delivery slot?

BrokenBrit · 21/03/2020 07:57

Not ideal at all. I think Tesco are doing it separately? They are trying to reduce the people I guess. A lot of NHS live with vulnerable too. Hard times.

SauvignonBlanche · 21/03/2020 07:59

Yes that’s probably why they’re doing it @ineedsun sounds good but won’t have any impact. Hmm

madcatladyforever · 21/03/2020 08:01

As NHS that's useless for me anyway I work those days and I'm already at work at 8.

pazwaz70 · 21/03/2020 08:05

A colleague went to M&S yesterday to try and do a little shop. Everyman and his dog were in. Assistants couldn't police it,didn't know who were genuinely NHS.
It's a shit storm!

pazwaz70 · 21/03/2020 08:06

I wouldn't care us frontline NHS workers are already at work at that time. Couldn't possibly do our shopping at that time.

ineedsun · 21/03/2020 08:19

I also think (and I say this as the wife of a nurse and as someone who worked in the nhs for over twenty years and now teaches people to become HCPs), they aren't the only people who are leaving their families and putting themselves and their families in vulnerable situations right now. Lorry drivers, teachers, police, firefighters etc. are all doing this.

Also, not all health and care staff work for the NHS, so as it stands, the HR officer who works for the NHS can work from home but would get access to all these things, but the nurse or carer who have been working in a nursing home or supporting vulnerable people in the community wouldn't?

PurSav0n · 21/03/2020 08:31

School staff caring for key worker children need same/more flexibility than an NHS appointments clerk.

These measures are making it worse for other key workers.

As an aside Dh got up early ( which we won’t be able to do from next week) and Sainsbury car park was full of people with white vans filling up. Starting to see why there is nothing left as we leave work.Hmm

nagynolonger · 21/03/2020 08:42

We don't normally shop online but have got a slot in April. So we should wait until then? Get your head from up your a*.

They should do this but give NHS and others who work long anti social hours in key jobs 3 mornings and the elderly 2.

goldpartyhat · 21/03/2020 08:45

Should be on alternate days, or at least have separate checkouts so that they're not queuing together. Went to Lidl yesterday and the queue was a mile long, everyone stood close to each other. Put down my bleach and went home.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2020 08:47

Sainsburys appear to be run by their marketing department. Kicking out nice headline grabbing emails with very little thought behind them.

I'm still waiting to know how they are going to know DW uses a wheelchair and has MS ? I'm guessing it involves a white hen and black rooster ?

Number3or4 · 21/03/2020 10:36

I like the idea of separate days, but dh who is a nurse, shift starts at 7.30 am. So people working same shift as him won’t benefit from this. A school mom work starts at 10am. So maybe different trusts or different departments work different hours. Ps, dh feels very valued by the offer. He is self isolating at the moment and haven’t tried it. But the whole thought made him smile and followed by worry about the vulnerable.

BubblesBuddy · 21/03/2020 10:43

My mum is 96 next week and is still able to drive. Queueing and parking at 8 in the morning for the very elderly is a nightmare. Not for many aged 70. It’s difficult for her to be out at 8 am. A neighbour has volunteered to help but she’s not elderly so DM will really struggle to use the slot. I think the church and/or charities could help for authorised elderly people. It truly is a nightmare.

Gemzee · 21/03/2020 10:44

Oh I just posted about this, didn't realise there was already a post. Yeah I think it's madness Confused
