Why not a massive crowd fund?

When the Norte Dame burnt down, the wealthy fell over themselves to collaborate.

Why not something similar; administrated centrally and given like charity? Slebs can do their thing and mere mortals can give what they can . I know billions are needed but maybe a good amount could be taken. I’d donate

Is it a money issue though? Isn’t it more of an infrastructure and supply problem?

CanIHaveThat · 20/03/2020 22:52

Or maybe pay more tax in the future so then the NHS wouldn’t be so fucked.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 22:53

It’s totally not about money!

Apricotfool · 20/03/2020 22:54

It’s not simply a money issue you are right but money could help with the many societal problems, joblessness, food, bills. I’m sure it could help the nhs tooIn some ways

@CanIHaveThat yes. Taxes should be raised, not now but ASAP

Make no mistake, we will all be 'crowdfunding' this for years to come. The money Boris is throwing at this will have to be paid back - I am not saying he's wrong to throw money at it, quite the opposite, but there's no 'magic money tree' as was so frequently pointed out to his opposition last year. Expect taxes to rise once it's over, and possibly rapid inflation.

HappyHammy · 20/03/2020 22:58

Maybe our top rich list could pay to put really vulnerable people in hotels rather than see them sleeping rough on the street or set up community centres in their vast homes.

Apricotfool · 20/03/2020 23:02

@HappyHammy exactly . That sort of thing

Apricotfool · 20/03/2020 23:03

@TheMemoryLingers I do hope and expect that taxes are raised

Don't you pay enough tax already? Most working people do - so do retired people. It's fine to pay tax, we all have to but I wouldn't trust the government to do anything good with any more.

Yes, crowd funding would help but it would be better if local groups managed it, not nationally. I can see a lot of administration and strict criteria for who is entitled to it, plus proof that they need it.

Well, it's a thought and has come from a good place.

(Sorry, I'm not very clear, tired. I'll come back to this later.)

HappyHammy · 20/03/2020 23:05

There is a lot they could do especially when a lot of celebs are only rich thanks to their fans paying extortionate prices to see them. They could buy up hotels and refurbish buildings to house people.

TheMemoryLingers · 20/03/2020 23:06

I think there'll be no choice, Apricot but it could cause problems for those on low incomes if it happens across the board. However, the need to save lives must come before all else - all the money in the world is no good to you if you're dead.

AudacityOfHope · 20/03/2020 23:07

Well I think they prefer to imagine that what we all really need is them singing at us in a terribly po-faced and cringey manner...

GiantRedPanda · 20/03/2020 23:09

Don't you pay enough tax already?

Tbh, no. I'd prefer a system where I paid more tax but got more in return. Like an awful lot of European countries. Very few of our most valuable workers (eg food production, care) actually get paid enough to even worry about how much tax they pay!

Apricotfool · 20/03/2020 23:10

@lyndq07 I don’t think we do pay enough tax. I’m not rich, I earn just below the national average. When tax rises or reductions happen, it’s literally pennies to most middle earners, I would pay more. Of course the very vulnerable should be exempt

OP posts:
Apricotfool · 20/03/2020 23:13

@GiantRedPanda exactly. I would pay double the tax I pay to have an NHS I was truly proud of

Most of us would if we could trust the government to spend the extra money where it is needed - but do we?

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/03/2020 01:15

I know self-employed people who have done every legal (and sometimes illegal) trick in the book to minimise tax / ni payments. Now these same people are complaining that the government isn’t helping them as much as employed people. There may well be a u-turn later re the support, but honestly I think self-employed tax and NI should be mandatory and unavoidable (But possibly postponable) if you turnover a certain amount.
