MOT for car

FIL is panicking about his MOT. It's due in April, he's over 70 and worried that due to social distancing/closures he won't be able to get it done.

The DVLA website says cars would have to be SORNed in this circumstance but that means he wouldn't be able to get to the supermarket etc. when he needs to.

This must affect thousands of people, does anyone know if something from the DVLA is coming on this?

He doesn't need to wait until April, he could get it done now. If it's within a month of his MOT expiry the original date is honoured but if not it'll still be valid for a year.

I've seen that the insurance industry is asking government to consider issues like this.

As your FIL is over 70 he has been told to self isolate so he shouldn't be taking the car for an MOT now anyway.

Have you got any garages locally that would collect the car, test it and return it?

I have friends who are mobile mechanics. They’ll MOT without contact at the moment... he’ll be able to find someone who can help.

I shouldn’t think that people will be able to drive cars without an MOT unless things get really, really bad, but he can get it done now.

If he’s really nervous, can you drive his car? Or do you know anyone with insurance that covers third party vehicles; so they can drive it there and back for him?

I've enquired and apparently it's due 7th May. He's already keeping in as much as possible, as MIL is severely asthmatic.

Key workers surely won't be able to get MOT done either?

DH is an MOT tester and it's business as usual at his workplace. He says they have to use protective covers on the insides of cars, but so far there is no mention of reducing any services

My car's MOT is up end of April. I'm self isolating due to symptoms of my DC, plus I'm.in a vulnerable group.

I have no intention of getting the car MOTd. I'll take the risk of a fine. I won't be driving it anyway. I have got a click and collect due next weekend but that's before the expiry.

Surely this won't be something that will be something they will pursue given the circumstances. If it is, then so be it. Tbh, I think we all have far more important things to worry about unfortunately.

Heard today all car MOTs are extended for 6 months from March 30th. Just don't drive anything stupidly unsafe and it's fine. It's on the DVLA website, I don't have the link to hand as I'm on my phone now but it's there

This is very good news in very uncertain times - but I wonder if the garages will be reimbursed for the lost business from resulting repairs needed to get the vehicles to pass?

Unless they find they have a boom in the Autumn from the extra repairs needed for cars that have gone 18 months since the last one instead of 12?!
