Can I suggest you do something?

Which is what I've been doing, (I may get a flaming here, maybe not).

Why not buy your food from small suppliers online? There's lots of next-day availability, it helps support small businesses, you can stay out of the supermarket and thereby ease the situation for others, and you get loads of great things to eat and drink?

What's not to like?

It might seem a bit 'let them eat cake', but I like eating nice food and I want all the small producers to still exist when this is all over. So instead of hitting the already overburdened supermarkets, get online, look for local and artisan producers and suppliers, and spend some money with them.

I've always wanted to order from this company but can't afford it. If anyone wants to send me a hamper I can swap for a fancy Lidl tissue box and a packet of pasta Grin

I did have an order from another Greek deli last week Fedup, I ate rather a lot of saganaki last night!

minipie · 21/03/2020 13:08

I agree OP.

In London, these are wholesale companies who have switched to home delivery:

New Covt Garden market has 4 suppliers offering home delivery www.newcoventgardenmarket.com/blog/home-deliveries-of-fresh-fruit-and-vegetables-from-new-covent-garden-market. Also do eggs and some other basics

Smith & Brock will send veg, eggs, milk etc they do different boxes at set prices, email them for details [email protected]

Market Fresh Produce, based in Clapham Junction rail arches - not delivering but open 3am(!)-10am for cash payments. Free parking

Sheringhams Fine Foods, they have eggs, bread, milk, pasta and tins as well as fruit and veg www.sheringhams.com based in SW8

Also if you are comfortably off... Please please donate money to a foodbank charity eg The Trussell Trust. They are going to be very much needed over the coming months Sad

I'm shopping local rather than using companies with a big online presence. Plus, a lot of the ones I've looked at aren't taking on new customers because they're snowed under with requests.

Our local milkman delivers egg, bread, juice, fruit and vegetables.
Local bakeries are still open and selling fresh bread, cakes, pies, sausage rolls etc.
Cafes and restaurants that have been forced to close are selling off the fresh stock they have in - milk, eggs, fruit, meat etc.
Local farms are selling eggs and milk.
We have a local "cake cupboard" where a lovely lady makes cakes and sells eggs. You just put your money in an honesty box and get gingerbread, cake, cookies - all sorts. Fresh and local.

I never considered spending money on locally produced food as a waste and have been doing so for decades.

minipie · 21/03/2020 16:29

Here’s another one, London and Home Counties. They have non dairy milks and tofu etc if of interest

I can recommend a very high quality wholesale food vendor for those who live in London.

Especially those who love Eastern European (romanian, greek, bulgarian, turkish, hungarian) food can appreciate it. Prices are very affordable.

@1Micem0use

Polish shops and asian supermarkets are great value. They dont do deliveries, but it's fun trying new foods. Think cheap rye bread, interesting cheeses, Indian sweets, and eggs come in 24 packs.
I love my local Polish supermarket - they have great stuff!

I use a local bakery since lockdown (they only used to supply commercially but lost all that during lockdown so started doing pop up shops in the local area - amazing bread and pastries and so cheap!)

I do use a local farmshop once a month and get takeaways from the cafes/restaurants on our village green. Also get milk delivered.

I haven't really got time to buy everything from various different sources though I'm afraid - sounds like a logistical nightmare!

Racoonworld · 06/12/2020 22:33

I’d like to buy the only places I seem to be able to find round here that do a good range are boxes where you don’t get to choose the produce and are subscription. I also don’t have the time to order from multiple websites so need something which I can get a whole weekly shop from.
