Can't believe how many people are off out tonight. Local bars are even advertising half price drinks and encouraging people to have that "last night out". It's clear a lot of people do not understand the meaning of social distancing. Weren't we told on Monday to avoid unnecessary social contact? I wonder how this will affect the numbers infected with the virus.

Fools. Utter fools.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 20:39

I thought this, announce on a friday evening you are going to shut all pubs etc form the next day. what is bound to happen? a total disaster. the levels of total selfishness and stupidity of people in the country is actually astounding me on daily basis.

MegaClutterSlut · 20/03/2020 20:43

Pubs are packed where I am. People really aren't taking it seriously, by the time they do it'll be too late, dickheads

EngTech · 20/03/2020 20:45

Darwinian Theory in action perhaps ?

My husband is a chef and he is still going to work (just). It's all well and good people saying avoid restaurants and pubs but he relies on customers walking through the door to pay his wages. As it is all staff are down on hours as there are way less customers than usual. Unless they are told they have to close completely he has no option but to hope they continue to come in. Even now with just deliveries he will struggle for hours and pay. Will he still be included in the wage payment if technically he is still earning, though nowhere near enough?I'm a SAHM so we rely on his income to survive and tbh we only just get by as it is. Believe me if he could stay at home he would but the reality is he needs to work for as long as possible. Please think about this from our point of view.

happymummy12345 · 20/03/2020 20:56

As I've said repeatedly those stupid people are paying his wages therefore making sure my son can eat and has a warm home

StormyClouds · 20/03/2020 21:24

I think we have to be very careful about asking people to restrict their lives to an unreasonable degree. As I've said on other threads, this situation is going to be around for many months if not years.

In fact, DH and I are sitting in the local as I type and it's packed to the rafters- busier than a normal Friday night I'd say.

TheMemoryLingers · 20/03/2020 21:25

I sympathise, @happymummy12345. My husband (leisure industry job) has just had a text message to confirm no more shifts for the foreseeable future - we are waiting to hear if his employers will do the 80% thing or just lay people off. He worked varying shifts so we'd have to hope they calculated an average. I still think the decision to close hospitality & leisure venues was the right thing to do. Trying to think of it that his job would be no use to him if he succumbed to the virus.

divafever99 · 20/03/2020 21:59

I do really sympathise with all the people who will be affected financially by the closure of pubs/restaurant, but the longer we take to stop social contact, the longer this will take.

This is a pubs fb in my town

Keep away from the pub!!!
Whatdoyouknow66 · 20/03/2020 22:03

They have then removed some comments on social distancing and a someone else screen shot the government website that was also removed by them

ShellsAndSunrises · 20/03/2020 22:05

That’s not what he said; he asked people to close as soon as possible tonight. Although a lot of pubs and things seem to have been caught completely off guard... thankfully most pubs in my town appear to have closed at about 7pm. They needed too, town was rammed earlier, the park is full of teenagers hanging out in big groups, it’s like nothing has been happening.

Nat6999 · 20/03/2020 22:08

Pubs here are staying open until all the beer has gone, most are selling it at half price. From what I have seen on Facebook it looks like New Year's Eve up there, pubs are packed out, the street is packed out as well. Other than one pub which is a Wetherspoons, all the others are independents & I guess they need to make as much as they can tonight because who knows how long it will be before they can open again. The breweries will still want their rent & the bills will still need paying.

CatBatCat · 20/03/2020 22:14

Not convinced they'll all stay closed. Underground speakeasy bars will start opening up like they already have in Berlin.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 22:16

shells yes, sorry that is actually what he said. However I imagine a lot of places will interpret that as being closing time tonight , although glad to see where you are there is some sense.

thenightsky · 20/03/2020 22:23

A FB friend of mine has posted pics of himself in the pub having his last pint.

He's a nurse.

ChequerBoard · 20/03/2020 22:46

It's bewildering, people I know that hold down very senior jobs and who I know to be extremely well educated are 'checking in' to the local pub on Facebook for a 'last hurrah'.

WTF?!?

okiedokieme · 20/03/2020 22:50

@divafever99

but the longer we take to stop social contact, the longer this will take.

Actually no, the opposite. The reason to reduce contact is to slow down the spread to allow the health service to cope with complications. Herd immunity relies on us all catching it, just we need to control the speed.

pocketem · 20/03/2020 22:54

No helping some people, even though this whole shutdown is to benefit them

Keep away from the pub!!!
