Am I in a vulnerable group?
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 18:02
I’m finding this confusing, I could ring the doctors but I’m loath to unless I really need to.
I get offered the flu jab and health check every year for ‘chronic disease - infarction’, so although I get offered the flu jab I’m not on the list for those that are vulnerable so I don’t think I fall into one of the vulnerable categories? Does that sound right?
KittyDee · 20/03/2020 20:48
I think you are classed as vulnerable if you get offered a flu jab. I would imagine there are so many conditions that fall in this category that they have not managed to list them all.
amandalives · 20/03/2020 20:51
Yes I think everyone who gets the flu jab is vulnerable. The exception being healthy individuals who are offered the vaccine due to their working environment.
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 20:58
Thanks both, I don’t know if I’m overthinking but because it says (flu jab) and then goes on to list some conditions I thought it meant those who are offered a flu jab because of these conditions. I have been told that on Monday it will be possible to log into a government website and download a certificate which confirms if you are classed as being in a vulnerable group. Not sure how true that is though as it would be pretty hard to set up I’d have thought.

I'm offered a flu jab yearly because of my asthma. But I think because it is regular asthma not severe that I am not classed as vulnerable?
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 21:03
I think long-term asthma definitely classes you as vulnerable @HiDuggee —sorry— it doesn’t specify severe on the list, just ‘long-term’
Matildathehun77 · 20/03/2020 21:04

I thought that, I have mild, well controlled Asthma that hasn't caused any major issues ever and only minor issues 3 times in my life. So I'm in work, fine but am getting so many lectures that I should be giving up. I think only your GP can really advise though.

You will fall into the group which needs to be extra careful and apply social distancing. The asthma which is for the vulnerable group which the nhs will.contact in regards to isolation is severe asthma. This a rare form of asthma also known as brittle asthma which is an actual diagnosed condition. People who have this form of asthma need more than the regular two inhalers. My son is 12 has a diagnosis of brittle asthma (severe), he takes 3 inhalers, montelukast, azythromycin long term and 8 steroid tablets a day. Not many people know about severe asthma which makes the advice unclear for a lot of people.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 21:10
I think it's brittle asthma(where you regularly end up being n hospital)that's an issue not well controlled.
An infarction/chronic disease means you are most probably in the vunerable catagory, call your doctor.
AlfieandAnnieRose · 20/03/2020 21:15
I read that those whom are vulnerable will be sent a letter by the nhs and told what they will need to do. This is from Monday so hopefully you’ll find out soon
MigGril · 20/03/2020 21:27
Would it just be brittle asthma (this is a particularly chronic foarm of asthma that isn't controlled) you can still have severe asthma and end up needing steriods + hospital admition without it being brittle asthma. My so has had 2 course of steriods and 1 hospital admition in the last six months, he takes an inhaler twice a day, montelukast and antihistamine every day but doesn't have brittle asthma.
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 21:30
I thought that was only for the very vulnerable @AlfieandAnnieRose ?
I’d have thought that would put him in the vulnerable group @MigGirl, maybe even the very vulnerable but I don’t know, it’s just so unclear without checking with your GP and it doesn’t seem feel like we should be contacting them. I can’t get through by phone on a normal day anyway!
amandalives · 20/03/2020 21:34
Op, I think I saw someone on TV explain it, they said the lost underneath were just some common examples as I guess the list would be very long if they named every condition. If it's possible for you to self isolate then I would. I expect due to the way online shopping etc has gone it will be hard for many to completely self isolate for the 12 weeks.
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 21:39
Ah ok @amandalives that’s helpful thank you
cloudchaos · 20/03/2020 22:08
Yes I think if you're offered a flu jab that's the way the government are saying is a quick barometer as to whether you're in the vulnerable group - so sounds like you are.
Smellbellina · 20/03/2020 22:27
I feel terrible as have told DB I should be self/isolating, he’s homeless and with everywhere closing he is running out of places to go.
