I've just heard that the social distancing measures may go on for ONE YEAR.

The advice for children is that that they can go to the park but don't have physical contact, so no rough and tumble and team sport, but they can walk or cycle, two meters apart.

They won't see their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, school friends etc.

Somewhere (I know but it's all up in the air at the moment) I heard that car travel may be limited to 2km from home and no more than 1 person in the car - I don't know if that meant just the driver or passenger and driver.

To think of doing this for 3 months was bearable, 6 months just about but 1 YEAR?

It is like being imprisoned. I worry I genuinely can't live like this.

With this, our family has a saying 'don't go carrying a can of petrol'. Which means, don't go borrowing trouble - God knows we've got enough that has already eventuated to worry about.

It's going to be hard. No doubt about that. But it will pass, and we have to live with it while it's here, as much as anything for our children. They need us to be strong, they need us to be resilient, they need us to help them do the right thing.

It might not be nice but to be honest, I think it’s far better than thousands of people dying unnecessarily.

losenotloose · 20/03/2020 18:23

Where did you hear this from?

CharlieTangoBanana · 20/03/2020 18:30

You and your family may be lucky to survive this, others won't be so lucky.

You say you can't live like this but if you don't others may not live at all

BonnesVacances · 20/03/2020 18:34

Not being funny OP, but there are thousands of disabled and chronically ill children who live like this every day. For example, this has been our life for 4 years. You can do it. Believe me. You'll have to.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 18:42

Could schools be shut for a year then? I feel sorry for only children.

I think divorce rates are going to rocket and suicides too which is awful Sad

For some people I do think this is going to be very difficult indeed.

I'm lucky. I'm autistic so I don't really socialise anyway and do all my shopping online. I am currently on maternity leave and mainly I just won't be able to go back to work as soon as I hoped.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 20/03/2020 18:47

It's tough. Take it one day at a time. Never take anything for granted again.

pigsDOfly · 20/03/2020 18:48

No more than one person in the car?

How the hell is that going to work?

My DD has three children and is pregnant. So are you saying that she and her DH are not going to be able to travel in a car together or with their DCs for a year? They all live in the same house.

Absolute rubbish.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 18:53

Think of it this way, are you willing to lose close members of your family to this?

Cockatiel · 20/03/2020 19:06

I'm hopeful that it will be in waves even if it does last a year ie some restrictions lifted and then put back in place again as pressure mounts etc

I understand the concerns as though clearly social distancing is essential at the moment, it's at a profound cost. Let's hope an effective treatment is found to ease the pressure as soon as possible, even though a vaccine is clearly some way off.

ValleyoftheHorses · 20/03/2020 19:07

I have an only child and I’m really worried about his mental health😢
The article on BBC suggests it will be a series of rolling closures hopefully so periods where the schools open again in between.
Fingers crossed for this.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 19:15

I hope the car thing isn't true as that would stop all sorts of people working who we need ,though as a nurse I expect I'd get enough to get to work.Public transport is being cut, many people are isolating completely or working from home so consumption anyway is lower.

Namethecat · 20/03/2020 19:17

Is there a Corona virus thread 31 please I can't find it ? Thank you

Where would they be travelling to? It only takes one person at a time to do essential errands like shopping or picking up meds.

2km from home wouldn't work in rural areas. I'm not that rural, our nearest local shop is 3 km away.

itsgettingweird · 20/03/2020 21:49

The 2km thing would be for non essential I think.

People who have to work, travel to shops and pharmacies etc wouldn't be limited.

The 1 person has been put in place in Spain. It's to stop families just all going out for a jolly when 1 person can do the job.
