to think that our children seem to be carrying the can for all this so far?

It seems to me that from a social perspective, it’s our children who have, so far, given up the most in order to support the country through this crisis.

They have sacrificed their education; their friendships; their sports events; concerts, shows, and end of term celebrations.

The most vulnerable groups of adults will have had to make the difficult choice to self-isolate.

And meanwhile, our fit, healthy grown adult population continue to go to the gym or the pub.

Couldn't agree more. I'm devastated that so many children are missing out on so much.

Teacher12345 · 20/03/2020 17:29

Boris has just closed the pubs, gyms, theatres etc.

RuffleCrow · 20/03/2020 17:30

Pubs are all closing tonight op.

SirChable · 20/03/2020 17:32

You’re a few mins out of date, OP....

DillyDilly · 20/03/2020 17:32

Hundreds of thousands have or will have lost their jobs very soon, the economic impact of this will be horrendous. Far too many people will die from this virus, so I think our poor darlings missing end of term fun pales into insignificance really.

Anyone who isolates, regardless of their age will miss personal contact with friends and activities but needs must.

Those that are going to pubs and carrying on as normal shouldn’t, they aren’t following advice and their days of doing this are numbered.

Think of all NHS staff and what’s ahead of them when complaining of kids missing out on the nice to haves,

museumum · 20/03/2020 17:32

I’ve given up all my clubs and groups too. And play dates for my son are as much for me to see my support network and family. This isn’t “woe is me” but tbh my son and I are very similarly affected (but I have the stress of trying to work!)

Zilla1 · 20/03/2020 17:32

Really? I should have thought the UK nurses and doctors working without PPE or with inadequate or out of date PPE (Primary care from day 1 and acute where their better PPE has run out) putting their lives disproportionately at risk (even if healthy, below 60 and not at risk judging by the global deaths of HCPs below the age of 60 dying from what is thought to be repeated exposure to this corona virus) and the guilt from putting the vulnerable members of their families (elderly and at risk groups) at risk when that inadequate PPE leads to them bringing home virus and infecting their own families might see things differently.

RuffleCrow · 20/03/2020 17:33

It's not great for anyone but having seen dd in intensive care and needing a ventilator once already, and seeing her now happy and healthy atm, if bored and a bit lonesome, indoors, I can tell you there's simply no contest.

Oakmaiden · 20/03/2020 17:34

No, not really.

I mean it is affecting them, yes - but surely it is affecting everyone?

ADreamOfGood · 20/03/2020 17:35

I think children are more worried that granny might die and mummy may not have a job any more than about having to miss school, tbh.
The teachers (bless them) have provided so much work I cannot see my two being bored until about July.

Mercurial123 · 20/03/2020 17:35

YABVU the consequences for millions of people are going to severe and will last for years not just a few months.

OlaEliza · 20/03/2020 17:35

They have sacrificed their education; their friendships; their sports events; concerts, shows, and end of term celebrations.

Yabu. Education can be done via Skype/online. As can friendship. The rest isn't really important atm.

Hamsterian · 20/03/2020 17:36

Really? Are you joking?

“Given up the most to support the country”?

“They have sacrificed their education; their friendships; their sports events; concerts, shows, and end of term celebrations.”

Read your own sentence again and wakeup!

Reginabambina · 20/03/2020 17:37

Not any more apparently. You’ve also completely ignored the poor bastards that own small business whose insurance brokers are refusing to pay out (especially nurseries) or the people who have already lost their jobs.

LuluJakey1 · 20/03/2020 17:37

Rubbish op. We are all in the same boat. We have all given up things and had our lives restricted- and there will be more to come. We ned to stop moaning and looking for things to moan and complain about.

Just do your best for your child. That is all any of us can do. My DC have been at home all week - self-isolation. They have been absolutely fine. Yes they have missed school but we have kept busy and they have adjusted.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2020 17:38

Actually I think the fit healthy working population has given up a lot, or are you ignoring the mass redundancies going on right now?

SapphireSalute · 20/03/2020 17:38

what a load of rubbish!!

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2020 17:39

Kids can catch up on exams later. They have their lives ahead of them. Saving the lives of the vulnerable during a pandemic is more important than little Charlie’s A Star in music.

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/03/2020 17:39

Sorry, no, that’s bollocks.

Redwoodmaz · 20/03/2020 17:40

I can't believe what I'm reading!!!! FFS

monkeytennis97 · 20/03/2020 17:40

I think the millennials and gen Xers have made the biggest sacrifices. Losing their income/future security to protect others, which is devastating but necessary. I'm a teacher by the way.

Duckingell · 20/03/2020 17:40

I'm more concerned about adults who have to find money to keep a roof over the family's head.

From a personal point of view our business is going to struggle. There will be government assistance for us.

Children will be fine. Some will barely understand what's really happening. For those that are older it's an excellent learning opportunity.

chipsandpeas · 20/03/2020 17:41

utter bullshit

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 20/03/2020 17:41

Yeah- its well known that kids hate being off school isn't it?!

Sorry OP but this is ridiculous. Carry the can? how about people who have lost their jobs and are facing their lives collapsing before their very eyes? a kid having an exam postponed for a while is not even close in terms of stress

SoupDragon · 20/03/2020 17:41

Actually I think the fit healthy working population has given up a lot, or are you ignoring the mass redundancies going on right now?

I agree.

Besides, DD spent most of today in a "virtual classroom" and is currently on her bed playing a drawing game with at least 2 friends. All without leaving the house. Her dance and singing lessons will be online.
