Think my DH is being too cautious - takeaway

mumof2exhausted · 20/03/2020 15:51

I’m pregnant and been self isolating since Saturday, husband been working from home and as of today kids off school. Husband been to supermarket today. All super safe, keeping distance, washing hands etc. I’m fed up of cooking and really fancy takeaway but husband says not worth the risk? People preparing it / delivering it etc. I think he’s overreacting?? Am I right?

No, you are wrong IMHO

hairymuffet · 20/03/2020 15:52

I wouldn't have one and have avoided takeaway for several weeks now.

LtJudyHopps · 20/03/2020 15:54

I had one last night. It was amazing, paid online and just took the bag in.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 20/03/2020 15:54

There's another takeaway thread with the opposite consensus. If you trust your takeaway to not make you ill normally I don't see why not. I had contactless pizza on Monday - paid online, left on the doorstep, washed hands well before eating. Cant imagine too many germs surviving a pizza oven.

Noflora · 20/03/2020 15:56

As I put on other thread, Corona virus can be stable on cardboard for 24hrs and on plastic and stainless steel for up to 72hrs. Anything coming into my house gets quarantined in the garage first or disinfected immediately followed by handwashing. So no takeaways for us

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 20/03/2020 15:56

I had a take away last night. Same as pre packed food. Handled by people for people

BillywilliamV · 20/03/2020 15:56

You see, I would have takeaway. Wash your hands, open the boxes and empty into your own plates, throw boxes away, wash your hands again. Choose a supplier with a 5 hygiene rating, the heat of cooking will have killed the virus in the food and it will have been dished up hygienically.

WutheringShites86 · 20/03/2020 15:56

I'm having the same questions myself, I'm pregnant, social distancing and Friday is usually takeaway night! I'm thinking if I pay online, get contact less delivery, decant the hot food onto a plate them immediately chuck the boxes and wipe all the surfaces, wash hands etc then I don't see that it is any higher risk than food from the supermarket. The virus is passed from human contact and can live on surfaces but surely not in hot food?

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 15:58

I won’t have one & wouldn’t have got a couple of weeks now. No pre made good & wiping down everything delivered before putting it away.

I’m being as cautious as I possibly can be because I’m diabetic & have HBP.

I went shopping for a friend today as they’re isolating & didn’t have enough food in. I love them, so I did it, but it was a horrible experience and I wish she’s listened when I said to get some food in, in case they need to isolate.

I’ve planned & prepped (weeks ago so not panic buying! so I didn’t have to go to the supermarket, but what can you do when friends need help 🤷🏻‍♀️ (Couldn’t give them my food as they eat very differently)

BillywilliamV · 20/03/2020 15:58

This is the one way that we can support the hospitality industry!

Isthistrueor · 20/03/2020 16:01

I don’t like the notion of someone else preparing my food right now. I’m sure they’re washing their hands constantly but it’s just making me feel rather squeamish.

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 16:01

it will have been dished up hygienically

Not taking any chances on that! I’ve been in enough takeaway kitchens to barely be able to eat takeaway when things are ‘normal’.

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 16:02

9 days on the cardboard box...

MitziK · 20/03/2020 16:05

Surely your husband can cook tea tonight then, can't he?

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 16:07

@Noflora

Where are you getting 24 hrs on cardboard from? All reports I’ve read are

2/3 days on glass
3/4 days on metal
9 days on wood/paper/cardboard

A few random tears where it’s lasted long, but not too many

So everything I can
Is going into the spare room for days (bags dated) but anything needing the fridge freezer is getting wiped down with bleach or Dettol wipes.

No pre - made food I just don’t want to take the risk.

If I didn’t have ‘underlying conditions’ & was 10 years younger I’d probably take more risks though (pizza mmmmm)

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 20/03/2020 16:09

You don't eat the box. Put some gloves on, open the box, dish up with utensils, dispose of gloves and box, wash thoroughly, eat and enjoy.

middleager · 20/03/2020 16:10

No. I have avoided them for weeks now. Who knows who's coughed over the already cooked food.

Marieo · 20/03/2020 16:12

I would, but mainly as I feel sorry for them and being a small town it's likely they will never reopen following closure which is likely coming soon. I wouldn't try a new takeaway though, we have eaten from there for years and have never had issues. It is a risk though, as is anything brought in from outside the house at the moment. If he isn't comfortable having one then that's fair enough.

Noflora · 20/03/2020 16:15

From here and several other sites reporting on the same study www.bbc.com/future/article/20200317-covid-19-how-long-does-the-coronavirus-last-on-surfaces

mumof2exhausted · 20/03/2020 16:18

Thanks everyone mixed opinions -it’s chippy down the road. It’s great, best one. People travel to it as ours so good. But yeah he’s concerned about people working there handling stuff, the paper packaging etc. Yes he could cook but I fancied something more exciting than beans on toast! (He’s great at lot of things but not cooking!)

OP posts:
Noflora · 20/03/2020 16:18

Muddy don't forget to disinfect the kitchen surfaces where you put the bag and containers down.

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 20/03/2020 16:31

I wouldn’t. The touch the chip scoop which then goes in the chips repeatedly while they scoop. They touch the paper, they handle money, ingredients for curry sauce etc. How many customers will have touched the door handle, handled money?
The chippy staff see delivery people who bring supplies or go to the cash and carry. Anyone who has handled the chip paper from factory, shop or chippy worker & any of the above people they come in contact with may not know the have CV or may be a carrier with no symptoms.

I have someone very high risk at home so I’m with your DH.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2020 16:56

I wouldn't unless it was the only food I could get, but if you do maybe an option would be to get the oven hot before it comes and then get it really hot before eating it.

packetandtripe · 20/03/2020 17:00

@AmelieTaylor - 9 days on wood/paper/cardboard isn't what the study states, so I don't know where this is coming from. I think things get twisted in so many different media reports. If one person makes a mistake, others just run with it without checking the original source for themselves.

Actual original study is here: www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMc2004973

On cardboard, no viable SARS-CoV-2 was measured after 24 hours

cookiemonster5 · 20/03/2020 17:06

We had a Chinese last night. Was amazing! Best one we have had in ages. The lady stood well back from the door then opened the insulated box and let me take the bags out myself.
