Can you be fired for self isolating on the basis that a family member in the same household is unwell?

DH intends to self isolate with me on the off chance that we do have it, me and the children have some mild symptoms but nothing alarming at the moment. We are following government advice and staying indoors just to be safe.

DH intends to stay at home too in accordance to the guidelines.

He can't lose his job can he? His boss is known to be an arse.

I suppose it depends--they can fire anyone with less than two years in for any reason they want really.
Is he following company protocol?
I suppose to cover your ass, you could log it with your GP and/or 111 online. I know you don't have to (and they are overrun) but it's evidence.

Or detail why he is going into self-isolation in an email to his boss with a link to the PHE guidance. Again, this is a paper trail for you.

He has been there for less than two years unfortunately, it's a relatively new job.

Another member of staff is off for the same reason and has had no problems but that person is more senior.

He has emailed in last night I'll ask him what exactly he has said and if he has included links to the PHE guidance

Is his company financially affected by this? Are they likely to lay people off? In which case I'm afraid it might go against him. He probably isn't alone in this dilemma.

He has just filled in an isolation note, we didn't know about those!

Thank you for the replies Smile

Fortunately his company isn't affected by this, quite the opposite. (Think of the busiest places at the minute, non health care related)

If he's been there under 2 years. They can fire you for wearing the wrong colour shoes

Sad. But true

Unfortunately, I think we're going to find out who decent employers are and who aren't during all of this. There's no way to tell. Good luck.

Hopefully it is ok. I haven't contacted 111 because I know how over ran the service is at the moment and I'm not unwell enough that I can't be at home.

I have aches, abdominal and back pain with a tight chest. The children have new coughs. DH has no symptoms but after checking the guidelines it says he has to isolate too. If they're not happy with the isolation note he will have the advice confirmed by HCP's over the phone.

It is a concern that they can fire him absolutely. But would they prefer to risk a potentially asymptomatic coming into work and spreading it around a workforce that is essential at the moment (food retail)

Very difficult position to be in for following government advice
