70 year old Dad has virus. Is there any hope?

I've just been told my 70 yr old dad has the virus or at least has the symptoms.. not been diagnosed officially. He was admitted to hospital last night with throat pain and breathlessness. But the hospital have told him he should be able to go home tomorrow! I'm confused- shouldn't they be keeping him in?

From what I've read symptoms get gradually worse.

I feel a bit numb at the moment. Is it likely he will die of this?

Most people feel shitty for a while but they do just fine, even in the over 90s and beyond. The odds are strongly in his favour!

@Savingshoes you have no idea about the circumstances. I’ve reported your horrible and unhelpful post

rwalker · 20/03/2020 17:08

All the figures are averages he's been checked and they would keep hold of him if they needed to

If there was “no hope” the death rate would be 100%

So let’s put this into perspective OP

@Bringringbring12
I interpret it as there have been other cases at the same hospital, but that CoffeeRunner has not been involved in the care of those that died. The two that she did care for recovered.

meonekton · 20/03/2020 17:29

If you look at the stats, it is very likely that many survive. Most people survive. Some older people are actually more healthier than younger generations.

Bringringbring12 · 20/03/2020 17:33

Ah thank you that’s clear

CoffeeRunner · 20/03/2020 17:36

@Bringringbring12 sorry, I mean the two I personally have looked after on my ward are doing well. Others have died within my hospital but I have not been directly involved in their care.

Eat well, stay positive helps

Mittens030869 · 20/03/2020 17:41

Mucus thinning cough syrups can be helpful, as can using a humidifier or steaming himself.*

I can say this from personal experience this last week. It really helps. It made such a difference when my mucus got thinner and I was able to cough or puke it up.

The overwhelming consensus is that this is a dry rasping cough with no mucous.

Do you suspect you had corona or did you test positive?

Mittens030869 · 20/03/2020 18:34

It was a dry cough initially, for a week. The thing is that there is mucus that the cough doesn't get out, hence it blocks the airways. I puked it out, the cough wasn't getting it out. People end up drowning when their mucus ends up in the lungs, as I understand it.

No I wasn't tested, they might test it now, but they probably won't. I think I caught it from my DD2 (8); she developed a high temperature, chest pain and bad headache for 3 days.

"A 103 year old grandmother in Wuhan recovered form the virus. You have to remember it’s still very small numbers who face mortality."
70% over 80 will survive

PeterWeg · 20/03/2020 19:00

"Most people survive. Some older people are actually more healthier than younger generations."
Being "healthier" makes no difference. Being young improves survival rates.

YangShanPo · 20/03/2020 19:04

Tom Hanks had quite a mild case he says and he is in his 60s with diabetes. Also the health Secretary Nadine Dorries mother was 84 and had a mild case.

AndromedaPerseus · 20/03/2020 19:07

I’d only start losing hope if he needed ventilating

woodencoffeetable · 20/03/2020 19:10

Paracetamol not ibuprofen if he has a temperature or aches and pains.

that is a myth www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/ema-gives-advice-use-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatories-covid-19

Porcupineinwaiting · 20/03/2020 20:39

@Bringringbring12 no I'm a zoologist, why do you ask?

I've read a lot about the treatment of covid19 and, in particular, the home treatment of viral pneumonia because I'm asthmatic. The info I'm giving the OP is proper medical info.

We've deleted a post above as it contained some information we weren't sure was entirely correct.

need

Bringringbring12 · 20/03/2020 21:08

I’m impressed mumsnet
I too was sceptical

Useryokyesno · 20/03/2020 21:13

I'm sure you're upset your dad is ill. But if you just take a moment to actually think about it not all over 70s are dying. So of course there is hope. Its not ebola.
Flowers for you and your dad
