London lockdown... do people think it'll happen? I think it needs to.

I'm in London (Zone 4 so not central) and yesterday I went out to shops and on the way back passed pubs and restaurants with people in them and I've just spoken to a friend who said she's been invited for drinks in a local pub for someone's birthday (she's not going). Other people have told me their gyms are still busy, quieter but still people there.

I honestly think until there is a lock down people (not all) will continue like it doesn't apply to them and the disease will continue to spread.

Also, I know people who intend to get away at Easter which only will spread CV further. I'm normally the least hysterical person but I can't a see how the spread can be curtailed if a lock down not implemented

I thought that locking down parts of Italy was what caused the virus to spread more quickly (as people then left and took it with them to other areas of the country).

SapphireSalute · 20/03/2020 10:51

i think the whole country will go to lockdown at the same time

the armed forces seem to be preparing for this as there are reports of them mobilising to our larger cities

this way it prevents movements to escape just one city being on lockdown (like Italy)

SapphireSalute · 20/03/2020 10:51

i also think its imminent

newlabelwriter · 20/03/2020 10:52

SapphireSalute that'd make sense. I really hope they do something.

If they're going to lockdown, it should be the entire country.

HorridReality · 20/03/2020 10:54

Yes and NOW, stop dithering Boris

MunchMunch · 20/03/2020 10:56

I think it needs to happen but everywhere. Judging by the gangs of kids on the park last night, the amount of cars passing my street, the window cleaners out and about, people walking about, sip going to bingo, I don't think anyone but my family and dm are taking it seriously.

Bringonspring · 20/03/2020 11:00

It needs to be the whole country if they do it or Londoners with flee.

I personally would force the pubs/restaurants etc to shut

newlabelwriter · 20/03/2020 11:02

I just got the impression last night at press conference that it's not even on the table at the moment. I know things move really fast so maybe it'll change. I think people just need to be told in no uncertain terms what they can and can't do because at the moment people, here at least, seem to be going about their daily business until they're told otherwise (which I know they have but some don't seem to realise.)

I think it's about shutting bars, non essential shops and gyms etc. Otherwise it's sending such mixed messages.
Telling people they shouldn't go out but then when they do they see places open as normal. Human nature is to then think that maybe you don't need to be so strict yourself.

It's also very unfair. Most people acting responsibly and having a boring rubbish time, a few people doing what they want and ignoring the guidelines and having fun.
How is that ok and going to get to a more community oriented world?

Frouby · 20/03/2020 11:06

The way Londoners are allegedly behaving is disgusting and I hope that a lockdown is announced starting immediately tonight. If they are 2 weeks ahead of the rest of the country why should we all suffer an additional 2 weeks because of their selfishness and stupidity?

Why should Manchester or Leeds or Newcastle face lockdown as well? It isn't as bad up here and simply closing pubs, gyms etc would solve anyone passing it on that way.

And if you live in London please bloody stay there and don't be dicks.

newlabelwriter · 20/03/2020 11:10

ThinkAboutItTomorrow agreed. Some people seem to have a real 'last hurrah' mentality and going to the pub etc before lockdown (if it happens). It's not everyone but I think enough to make a real negative impact.

Frouby being a dick isn't just a London thing and definitely not all Londoners but enough to make me very worried (and others I'm sure).

Surely it needs to? I'm witnessing lots of people just not taking this seriously.

I predict that come Monday, parents will be out in droves with their dc for their early holidays.

The shops, pubs and restaurants appear to be busier than ever.

StoodonLego · 20/03/2020 11:12

I don't want lockdown, but I feel that all these half arsed measures just prolong everything.

newlabelwriter · 20/03/2020 11:14

StoodonLego even 2 weeks ago I'd have found it unimaginable that I'd have been in favour of a lockdown and now I feel it's the only way forward.

Definite lockdown?

Our school has so many children who are vulnerable/children of ‘key workers’ coming in on Monday that is virtually business as normal.

Will that stop in a lockdown?

DirtyDripSpout · 20/03/2020 11:21

I don't think a lot of people are taking this seriously at all. There are a lot of OAPs still going out and socialising over coffees and using public transport which is worrying.

I also think the the number of reported cases are nowhere near the actual figure - not just in the UK but worldwide. The virus is highly contagious and lives on surfaces for days. We are not even near the peak yet.

There will always be those who will believe guidelines don't apply to them and deliberately flaunt the rules, or simply put their needs above others. We need to protect the key workers and the vulnerable and a lockdown has been shown to minimise the spread and keep everyone in check.

newlabelwriter · 20/03/2020 11:24

fedup21 I honestly don't know. Interested to hear what else people think may work ( bearing in mind people not all adhering to the government advice) - not being sarcastic BTW.

OP posts:
MashedSpud · 20/03/2020 11:38

The government won’t issue a lockdown because they don’t want to pay out to businesses that close.

As long as the money keeps coming in they don’t mind how many die.
