It’s just like a bad flu

I think the problem is that people were told that unless you’re already dead or dying, aged over 70, or have serious underlying medical conditions such as cancer...it’s just like having the flu. Maybe even milder!

Now we’re being told ‘young people, don’t think you will just breeze through this’.

The damage is already done. Online there are so many people who think:

  1. Children are less likely TO CATCH coronavirus.
  2. Children WILL only have mild or no symptoms.
  3. As long as granny and grandad are isolated, it’s fine.

So far, the people around me are still pooh-poohing this virus. I am starting to worry we just aren’t taking this seriously enough?

Can others feel the tide changing? Do you think people are recognising the seriousness?

Perhaps it’s just anxiety making me feel this way.

According to many people children cant catch it at all they think the only reason boris closed the schools is because they can spread it

Bookworm83 · 20/03/2020 09:45

I'm pretty sure I've got it. I'm pregnant and in self isolation. I will never know if I actually got it since they're not testing (unless it gets so bad I end up in hospital).
But so far it does seem much milder than a flu, so if that's as bad as it gets I guess I should consider myself lucky.

Blackbear19 · 20/03/2020 09:51

I think the tide is turning. Streets are quieter people are visibly keeping their distance. I also think half the issue with comparing it to flu is many don't know the difference between a very bad cold and the flu and underestimate what flu does to you.

There are also myths about flu, you can't get out of bed etc. I could but couldn't be assed to get off the couch but hey i didn't have flu as i wasnt in bed.

The Italian medics are saying it's more like pneumonia than flu. That's the message we need to get out there.

DianaT1969 · 20/03/2020 09:55

Only people who didn't pay attention to Italy and China were glibly saying 'it's only flu'. Who did they think were on ventilators, if medics in Italy were having to choose not to treat the elderly?? It was well-know that the Chinese doctor whistleblower in his 30s died from it. A lot of people under 60 who have hypertension, asthma and diabetes have been concerned for a couple of weeks. Some of those no doubt having to still go out to work and risk getting infected. Lifelong smokers in their 40s and 50s may have decreased lung function and fear how they'll cope. Everyone needs to start behaving more responsibly to limit spread. Particularly companies, or particular managers who are still demanding that workers commute to the office.

I agree we need more clarity in this. When they say 80% get mild illness does that just mean not need medical treatment? What is the breakdown in this group of mild. How many a asymptomatic and how many are in bed sleeping for 2 weeks. If people with young children thought they would be too unwell to get out of bed and make dinner for their kids they would be a lot more concerned.
Most people I know seem confident they will be one of the ones who barely notice they have it

Blackbear19 · 20/03/2020 11:22

Blueberryham i agree mild illness in my head is a runny nose and a really sore throat off work feeling rotten for a couple of days. Looking at the triangle diagram some of those 80% will get pneumonia which to my head isn't a mild illness.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 20/03/2020 11:29

You have to understand that the virus is called SARS CoV 2. The virus causes COVID19. Anything with SARS in the name should be taken extremely seriously. However, in most it will cause a mild illness. “Mild” being anything up to pneumonia needing oxygen (as stated by the World Health Organisation).

The advice has never changed and you’re being told the same you have since February. We have been told from day one it will affect most mildly, but can be severe to critical for some. Just people actually seem to be listening now rather than brainwashing each other into “its just flu bro”. Lots of people call a cold “flu”. So all the confusion is around semantics and people’s misinterpretation of the facts.

tegucigalpa13 · 20/03/2020 12:00

Unchecked this virus will wipe out the over 70s and the sick.

It will also see off a good few thousand younger healthier people - just as seasonal flu does every year.

The health service will collapse. Only one in 30 seriously ill people will get anywhere near a hospital bed - let alone an ICU.

People need to get this message.

Goawayquickly · 20/03/2020 12:13

I’m seeing people describing themselves as low risk, they seem to think that means they’re unlikely to catch it rather than them not becoming severely ill so they’re carrying on as usual, do they really not understand nobody is at low risk of catching it and spreading it? It can’t be ‘well, I’ll be ok, sod the rest of you’ surely?

Misscoffeecrazy3 · 20/03/2020 12:37

I’ve just seen this. Very sobering.
