Why do people not think that social distancing doesn’t apply to them?

Is it because it’s not enforced? a neighbour, couple in the their 70s has a team of decorators in, they started on Wednesday. Another neighbouring couple also retired have just gone out with their golf clubs. There were people in the pub yesterday afternoon when my DH (NHS staff) walked home. For context we live in London.

My sister was openly asking people on Facebook yesterday who's still going to the pub at weekend I genuinely despair

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:21

Because the U.K. government has fucked the whole operation up entirely by dithering over what measures they implemented leaving people under the impression it’s not that important.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/03/2020 09:21

Out of that list I imagine the golf is ok Confused if they get in their car and walk directly onto the first tee and not using the clubhouse at any point

There's a whole 200 plus yards distance between holes Grin

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:23

Someone needs to go round with a cattle prod and zap them all. I volunteer. Nothing else to do now I’m unemployed Grin

PurpleBlueAnemone · 20/03/2020 09:23

I had decorators this week. I went out and left them to it.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 20/03/2020 09:28

I’ve got an oven cleaning man coming in on Monday (providing we aren’t on lockdown and we are all symptom-free). He works alone and I can social distance from him as well as cleaning before and after he attends.

CorianderLord · 20/03/2020 09:30

@purple coronavirus can survive on surfaces for hours... so they could've infected your whole house or your house them.

Congrats on possibly adding to the problem because you think you're 'special'

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:33

See^^ People would rather just carry on with their plans. No regard for the fact that whilst they might wipe their door handles, tradesman is going from house to house and taking whatever he picked up on each one on with him.

Anyone with any sliver of community responsibility would have cancelled any appointments or works planned.

This is really far more important than a spotless sodding oven.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:35

And I guarantee you that type of people who won’t cancel an oven clean Hmm are also not following the guidelines at other times too. So being symptom free on oven day means sod all.

SumOfTheSquares · 20/03/2020 09:36

I think people don’t realise how bad it’s going to get. They’re still under the illusion that it won’t happen to them - only the elderly, underlying conditions etc.
For most, it won’t happen to them, but why take the risk - a young (20’s) man died in Europe because he had an underlying condition he didn’t know about.

Rainallnight · 20/03/2020 09:37

I just can’t believe it. We’ve temporarily relocated now to Ireland to be closer to family (my mum is dying of cancer) and every one here is taking it extremely seriously and doing all the right things. Even people who is normally consider to be ‘party’ people are social distancing and following the guidelines.

The U.K. is in for a huge shock once cases start growing.

Frownette · 20/03/2020 09:38

was that the one with leukaemia?

The government haven't set strict guidelines, it's muddling people.

LazyFace · 20/03/2020 09:38

Part of me stopped caring. I can't fight this, they're ignoring government advice and news from all around the world. We have isolated ourselves as much as we could and only doing essential trips to shops (and doing as little as possible of that).
I saw a group of pensioners doing their normal group walk, nicely chatting to each other.
In Italy doctors have died as they had to work without gloves.... and people all over the world don't listen.

HermanHermit · 20/03/2020 09:40

Mum set is proving to be a fascinating insight into how stupid and / or selfish the great British public are. Shall I go in holiday? If I’m isolating, can I go to the shops? Why can’t exams go ahead? But it’s my birthday! Etc etc. We are going to hell in a handcart because of stupidity.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:40

The thing is- most people won’t get it- but everyone can carry it on to someone else. Everyone needs to think of themselves as a big ol’ spray gun full of CV that is spraying constantly. Take responsibility for where you’re allowing your spray to go and consider how many at risk people you’ve sprayed without even knowing.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/03/2020 09:44

Agreed. How many threads of “here’s a scenario and can you tell me the rules don’t apply to me” do we need?

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 20/03/2020 09:45

It's not always possible to cancel everything though. I have someone coming in to fit a new job as we rent and ours failed its gas safety check a week ago, it had to be disconnected. It's already proving hard enough to shop without being restricted to things that can go in the oven or microwave. I have 8 kids I need to be able to feed properly

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 09:50

Working hob= essential
Professionally cleaned hob= not essential.

People really shouldn’t need the difference explained.

BringMeTea · 20/03/2020 09:53

A. Thick
B. Arseholes
C. Thick arseholes

JJSS123 · 20/03/2020 10:01

Do you think taking my ten month old for a walk around a lake to feed the ducks is ok? We’ve been staying in for a week now and some fresh air is needed. But won’t take him if it’s not the best idea I just can’t decide

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 10:04

Are either of you in the group that has to completely self isolate for 12 weeks JJSS?

If not then walks should be fine every day as long as you’re not going on public transport and won’t be near anyone else.

TheFaerieQueene · 20/03/2020 10:06

Juan if I had a cattle prod, it would be yours! 🤣

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 10:09
Grin

I’d be so good at it.

Fairenuff · 20/03/2020 10:10

Because people are so used to the Nanny state that they can't think for themselves and have to be told what to do all the time.

tectonicplates · 20/03/2020 10:12

It's all very well calling people stupid, but what do you expect to be done about it? Boris's attitude hasn't exactly helped. He's allowing pubs and clubs to stay open. In Italy and France they've actually been arresting people for going out without a good reason. But then I know if they did that here there'd be outrage about civil liberties and the nanny state etc. Mind you we don't even have enough police to stop people. So what do you propose should be done to solve this situation?
