I've got a 3 and a 1 year old. we're on day 10 self isolating and it's starting to drive them bonkers. I've read on the advice that it's ok to go for a drive, which we have been doing to get them to nap, but I was wondering if we could go to the safari park? pay online before we go and just do the drive around bit, not any bits where you get out and walk around, so no contact with others? is that reasonable? happy to be told no, but genuinely curious what people think

There’s been quite a lot of animal feeding through windows involved at most safari parks we’ve visited. No idea whether this would be going on right now but if it were, little hand, deer or whatever saliva, little hand in little mouth. Who knows? Scientists aren’t quite sure, yet.
Not worth the risk.

Sounds fine on paper but you’d expose other people if your car breaks down or if you end up in a crash. I’d just stick it out and make plans to do this in four days time.

Tulipstulips · 20/03/2020 09:41

That’s not how corona started, Duchess. It’s from eating wild animals who have been stacked up alive in tiny cages in alleyways in markets and behind restaurants in their own faeces.

Thanks all. I definitely hadn't considered the possibility of breaking down so will leave it for the time being or needing the toilet for that matter Blush

I've also never heard of people feeding animals out of the windows in safari parks Confused maybe it just doesn't happen in the one nearest to us. Even so, I wouldn't let a 1 and 3 year old do that anyway.

Seriously? Ever thought that they may need to utilise as many staff that can go to work to look after the animals rather than pander to people who don't seem to be able to amuse their own children?

Fortunately West Midlands Safari Park closed yesterday.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 20/03/2020 10:12

ok poppy !!

I can amuse my own children thank you very much... I was looking for opinions about a suggestion, not an attack.

Also, if my local safari park has decided to stay open, I'm sure it has taken into account how to deploy it's own staff Hmm

Longleat, Windsor all of the large ones do it, they sell you the food.
(For herbivores, obviously 😁)

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 20/03/2020 10:33

Really Duchess ? that's cool. I've not been to the safari park for a long time so maybe they've started doing that at the one nearest too.

I would go. You can pay online, you are getting into a car, and staying in the car. Do not see the problem. You won't be mixing with people. If I'm missing something here, I'm happy for someone to explain but I really can't see the problem.

Only last night I was thinking that a drive through safari park would be a great thing to do.
Then I realised there are to many variables.
Issues with tickets and potentially having to get out of car and find staff etc
Toilets
Breakdown
Screaming kids who can't visit the gift shop
All cooped up together in the car

I'd rather wait and go when we can fully enjoy the experience.

Invisimamma · 20/03/2020 10:54

We're going to our local safari park at the weekend. None of us has had any symptoms, we're distancing but not isolating.

We have annual passes, we won't get out of the car and we'll take a picnic lunch to eat whilst in the car. It'll break up the day and we won't come into contact with others.

nogoodusernames · 20/03/2020 10:57

Well it does day going for a drive is fine doesn’t it?

Jumpingforgin · 20/03/2020 11:02

I also don't see the issue with this? Op is saying she will be inside the car with her family, the same as if she were at home, just giving the kids a change of scenery, a bit of sunlight, and some semblance of enjoyment in this utterly shit situation. Social distancing doesn't mean you cannot leave for house for god's sake, it just means don't mingle with others, don't socialise in groups, don't touch other people, and avoid anywhere that might force you into close proximity of others. We will all still have to enter supermarkets, and the staff in supermarkets still have to go to work, are they selfish for keeping the supermarkets open so others can eat? You can leave your house and still be conscious to socially distance yourself from others, just be sensible about it and keep up good hand washing hygiene. People's mental well-being is important too, and making others feel bad for their need to get out of the four walls of their house is unfair. We will be taking regular walks in our local open spaces, and exploring the outdoors with our children. If we see other members of the public, we will keep our distance, and change direction of necessary. Walk in an open field/park? Yes. Trip to a crowded pub? No. Trip to a safari park where you're going to be isolated in the car? Yes. Trip to a crowded indoor zoo? No. Social distancing will stop this spread of everyone goes about their business sensibly, keeping distance from others, but doesn't mean locking yourself inside for the foreseeable future. This could play out for months and months, if you're happy to confine yourself completely indoors for the next year, good for you, but for most, that isn't going to be possible. Don't try and make the op feel bad for a perfectly reasonable suggestion. She's hardly going to shake hands with the fucking safari staff.
