School Closures and Key Workers - I am so frustrated with the government

I am a teacher. Over the last two days I've been through the mill with everything that has happened. The closure of schools was a devastating blow, especially to my yr11 pupils whose future is now uncertain. I have cried, they have cried. It has been fucking awful. I am gutted, genuinly gutted. It has been compounded by the fact that I've had to self isolate since Wednesday because my husband has symptoms - I'm frustrated because I am well and feel blody useless at home, communicating virtually with my kids. When the government announced that schools would stay open to provide childcare for front line staff I was happy. I knew I'd be rota'd in - good. I will happily provide childcare if that is what the key people need to do their job. It is literally the only thing helpful that I can do. But, now the list has been released - there are 8 categories, pretty much most jobs can be covered by the list and it seems it applies to two parent households even if only one parent meets the criteria. We could potentially still have hundreds of pupils in school. Parents are frightened about losing their jobs and I understand that. But social distancing is the only way to beat the virus. We have just thrown the entire education system out of the window, but if it doesn't result in an increase in social distancing to save lives, what was it for?!

Here is the list:

@catgirl1976 no. I am a key worker. We have all been told to stay at home and we will be called on if needed.

I was trying to explain this problem to my manager this morning. She thinks because we are taking this approach, then everyone would be. Couldn’t really comprehend that lots of organisations would use the guidance to force their workers in unnecessarily, like yours 😡

catgirl1976 · 20/03/2020 13:36

I'm appalled by my organisations response. Have been all the way through but they've surpassed themselves here.

Technically we could still send our kids in, as DH is an essential worker. We won't though, as we're not cf's! I'll stay home with the kids, DH will work...

stressbucket1 · 20/03/2020 13:44

How people act today will determine how we are in 2 weeks time. Just because the schools are open doesn't mean you should use the provision. Both myself and my DH are key workers. I am front line NHS and he is a teacher. I was hoping that he would be able to spend more time at home to allow us to keep our kids off school and for me to do my job but there are so many parents signing up that he might have to be in.
This is a team effort we all need to do our bit. I really do not want to send my kids to school. Anyone that is frontline nhs knows the seriousness of this and wouldn't send children to school unnecessarily.
Everyone thinks their job is important but we are on track to follow Italy's course and we need to act now.

cadburyegg · 20/03/2020 13:50

@SubjectMatterExpert my husband shouldn’t be losing his job either, what do you suggest?

Didiplanthis · 20/03/2020 14:15

We are being as advised to only use the service if BOTH parents are key workers who cannot stay home. DH is full time front line health care he has to go in. I am also front live health care - usually very part time due to SEN children. I will only use the keyworker service if I am called in to do extra shifts to keep services running. i am told there may not be places for them as people are using places even if only one parent is a keyworker in a 2 parent family.

Gizlotsmum · 20/03/2020 14:35

I am allowed to send my kids in, I am trying to work from home but my employer rightly expects me to use the school if it is available. I am hoping not to need too but I might. Husband has the option to take unpaid leave... We cannot financially take that hit for the next however months... Selfish maybe but stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Northernwarrior · 20/03/2020 14:40

Yes we are!
I have had this argument at work because surely, with our students being over 16 they are capable of caring for themselves at home! Apparently we will still open for the vulnerable and so all staff must be in too

So yours is? Interesting. Mine is shutting down and there has been no hint of staying open for vulnerable learners (and we have quite a few) More conflicting and differing information. What a shit show!

DP is a teacher and has just been told he has to work Easter Holidays!!!!! pretty much everyone I know has has annual leave pulled back whatever their sector.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 20/03/2020 15:56

I'm a carer and dp is a paramedic. Ds's dad and girlfriend are both frontline nhs so we've no options. I feel like an awful mum knowing I need to send him to school where he may get ill. This made me laugh tho.....

I'm working the Easter holidays. Our school had a meeting today. We were deciding how we could make things fun for kids of NHS workers who might be scared and getting a shit deal.

I'm a teacher so in next week. I have three dcs but there is no way they are going to school, completely negates the point of closing the school (not to mention I need to stay well so I can work!) Luckily my eldest is 16 so he can look after the other two (13 and 11 so fine to stay at home.) My biggest concern is the lack of structure their days will have. It looks like we will be on a rota so only actually in school one day a week.
