The list of key workers is very long and lots of people will qualify but PLEASE don’t send your child to school if there’s some way of them staying at home. It’s not being done to inconvenience you, it’s to stop the spread and we need as few children in school as possible.

Seconded.

Bloody horrible experience for the kids, too.

GravityFalls · 20/03/2020 06:46

I think some people think kids at home are missing out. They’re really not, they’re the lucky ones, home is 100% the best way to be even if they play Fortnite for six months.

DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!

My daughter has virus and we all have it. She's got it so mildly she's annoyed with me who has it the most obviously. She's missing her last day of school so she's not speaking to me!

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 20/03/2020 06:52

I'm on the list, DH isn't so I won't be sending them but it is going to be 6 months of getting really good at Minecraft...

Wtfdoipick · 20/03/2020 06:53

Our school is opening to anyone who has free school meals so I know some parents are sending in needlessly. They are also insisting that children need to attend every day so part time staff are having to send in needlessly.

They sent the children out with letters yesterday, white paper offered a place, yellow not. There weren't many yellow.

DICarter1 · 20/03/2020 06:54

We’re on the list as we have a child with an ehcp but she’s not going in. The lack of routine without everything else would be horrible and she’s safer at home.

I’m in australia. We are still not closing schools. This week I kept them off because I had some mild symptoms on Sunday which have come to nothing so just a mild cold I think.

I really don’t want to send them to school on Monday but I will have to.

triedandtestedteacher · 20/03/2020 06:58

@Wtfdoipick that's probably because yesterday schools didn't know if it applied to free school
Meal children. We have nearly 500! The government have said it doesn't now and they should stay at home so your school will have to comply

Marieo · 20/03/2020 07:01

Unfortunately the list largely relies on the parents making the decision, so despite most people wanting schools to close no doubt they'll send them, despite their particular role not being directly linked to covid and being able to work from home. Sorry schools, I feel for you.

Matildathehun77 · 20/03/2020 07:06

The virus might be mild in some but it is life altering or deadly in up to 30% of people.

Please quote your reliable source for 30% figure? Because I've NEVER seen higher than 5% and when people randomly throw around high figures like this it creates real panic and fear.

I do agree with keeping your child off school if at all possible though, my child's dad has taken long leave from his work to care for our son because I'm a key worker.

Oakmaiden · 20/03/2020 07:14

Matilda - she said life altering or deadly. There is evidence that those who have it severely are left with significant after effects. That number could be close to 30%

AvocadoOwl · 20/03/2020 07:22

The list is long but if children have two parents then both have to be in key workers roles for the child to be eligible to stay.

Take up of offered places has been very low at our big primary. So much so that all of the schools within the academy trust are planning to combine remaining students in one school (cue more people pulling their eligible kids out).

Isseyflora · 20/03/2020 07:23

I’m wondering about school buses - we had ones with one child on them pulling up.

BelleSausage · 20/03/2020 07:23

@Matildathehun77

That is about the rate of people needing hospitalisation or ICU care. Many of them have been left with permanent decreased lung capacity.

Why do you think governments around the world are freaking out so much. This has long term health implications.

Wtfdoipick · 20/03/2020 07:40

triedandtestedteacher I thought from the press conference it didn't apply to free school meals, boris specified sw or echp as being included and talked about vouchers for fsm. I know our school though and that head will have every child possible in.

PenelopeFlintstone · 20/03/2020 08:25

I really don’t want to send them to school on Monday but I will have to
You don’t have to. They won’t arrest you. Do what your want. Lots of people are keeping their kids home in Australia.

BelleSausage · 20/03/2020 10:37

You absolutely can and should keep your kids home if you want to.

I say this as someone who is forever going on about good attendance. The circumstances are wildly different.

The government have made a right balls up of this.
