Filling meals for children

Four days into isolation I would welcome ideas for filling the children up, they’re constantly hungry and every time they eat all I can think is that’s more food gone. And feeling so very guilty for all our past food waste. Obviously not letting them realise I’m concerned.
So, any ideas? Have a delivery slot for next week and hopeful things will be in stock.
Hoping this supermarket hell stops soon, surely people’s freezers and cupboards must be full? That’s what I’m hoping anyway.

Thank you, am going to write a list and see if we can get ingredients. Things there I wouldn’t have thought of.
Growing vegetables - may sound mad but is anyone planning on doing this? We have a garden, no vegetable patches though, can you stick them in the flower beds? What’s easy? Have tomato and pepper seeds which I thought kids could start today in little pots. What else? Anything filling?

apples
carrot batons

@lavalamplady2

Starting a veg garden is always a great idea. In our cool climate things like carrots, onions, kale, cabbage etc always thrive.
Potatoes are very easy to grow, even in a large bag or bucket.
It's worth finding room for some fruit too. Strawberries are awesome to grow and you can put them in hanging baskets to save room.

My staples are:

Spag Bol, bulked out with lots of veg (butternut squash, carrot, courgette all grated in). Potential for garlic bread side to really fill up if you can get it.

Curry, bulked out with lots of veg (butternut squash, carrots, cauliflower - yes, really) potential for naan bread on the side to really fill up, if you can get it.

A chicken pasta sauce (again lots of veg - carrots, courgette, sweet corn, in a creamy tomato pasta sauce, but tinned toms or passata would do)

As extra to have for snacks - lots of fruit. I also have breadsticks and oatcakes/crackers in the cupboard - they’re not hugely interesting, but they fill a hole if hungry.

tomatos are great, and yes you can put them in the flower bed.
courgettes are easy too (and easy to cook as well)
peas grow fast and dc can eat directly from the plant. or you can grow pea shoots on the windowsill as salad)
sunflowers (you could get seeds from bird seed)
some herbs (fennel, mustard - great for salad)

Yorkshire puddings with meat, potatoes and veg. Cobblers or pies are filling. Lots of veg with everything.

I would try to limit snacks and focus on decent portions at meal times. They wouldn't be having a snack often at school. Maybe one mid-morning.

woodencoffeetable I think perhaps the novelty of being home near the kitchen plays a part? But after two, what I thought filling, meals yesterday our son was still eyeing up our dinner. Perhaps they’re just growing lots... Could courgettes go in the flowerbeds too? Did those many years ago and was amazed at the crop so thanks for the reminder!
bookworm i have a few of those plastic gardening trugs, thanks for the reminder. Guessing we need to make holes in the bottom? What’s the best use for them, most productive veg, potatoes? Do you get many potatoes from one plant?
elfdragon have just ordered a veg box from a local company on facebook so hopefully can do the bulking out. Luckily they like veg, big fans of cauliflower which has always surprised me

Thanks everyone, lots to be going on with. Anyone else feel a bit like we’re living in wartime Britain with respect to feeding the family? Feel free to tell me to calm down. **
