Any non key workers still being told into come to work?

Just curious, my work have closed to the public but staff will work behind closed doors. We can definitely keep 2m apart from each other and have sanitiser/sprays/a lot of hand washing awareness!
Feel like I am the only person I know who is a non key worker who is doing this?
I should add it’s not a huge concern to me at the moment, I just wondered if anyone else is still going to the office next week.

I’m still having to go to work , there’s only about 4 members of staff that could work from home but they are coming in as well.

MinnieMountain · 20/03/2020 07:22

I can do 90% of my work from home but I'm a conveyancer and we need to send physical contracts to clients.

LettuceP · 20/03/2020 07:23

I work in a restaurant, we aren't closed yet so staff still working. We are expecting the restaurant to close any day now but once they do we get a week's pay and that's it, nothing after that. Our hours have been cut to the bare minimum as it is so we can't afford not to go in, we need to work as much as we possibly can until they say we are closing.

Fashionablylate1999 · 20/03/2020 07:27

Non essential, still expected to work, if I don't work I won't get paid and I'm a single parent so no other income. I've no idea what I'm going to do now as my daughter can't go to school, can't go to grandparents, can't come to work with me... what's left?

Apolloanddaphne · 20/03/2020 07:28

My DD works in a pub which is still open as they will get no support from the government if they close by choice rather than be made to close. Some of the staff are no longer working as they have underlying health issues or are students who have gone home.

She wants to work as long as she can but is aware she is mixing closely with members of the public and could be bringing infection home.

The couple who own the bar have been very supportive and won't make anyone work who doesn't want to. They have also promised that none of their staff, even those not working, will go without money to pay rent, bills etc.

They are aware they have very loyal customers who use the bar a social lifeline. But on the flip side there regulars are mostly elderly men. My DD has been trying to educate them and talk to them about the CV and whet they should be doing to protect themselves but it is falling on deaf ears.

I hope they close soon but I can see why they have remained open so far.

DH is still working (structural engineer in agriculture so putting foundations in etc) can’t work from home, told if he goes off due to schools closing it will be unpaid, I am frontline nhs part time I will be off with the children as my wage is not enough to keep us afloat if I can’t arrange something else

Mumthedogsbeensick · 20/03/2020 07:28

I work for an independent opticians and we are all still going in to work. People are still booking appointments and we are booked up for the next 2 weeks and most of these people are over 70. I do worry about the optometrists being cooped up in a small room while testing but if we don't carry on I don't think the business would survive. We are wiping everything down after seeing each customer and washing the frames after they're tried on in a bid to keep things clean.

swapsicles · 20/03/2020 07:29

We're still in, I'm in the hospitality business and our last remaining guests go home today, currently we all have to go in for the foreseeable, cleaning, organising and keeping the site secure, although I can't see how there's enough work for all of us for the whole time.
Fortunately we are getting paid though so very grateful for that although some colleagues still moan, could strangle them! ( Though won't as that would involve getting too close!)

Latenightreader · 20/03/2020 07:34

I am going in to work - I will get more done there than at home with a toddler. Frustratingly they don't want me to work in my building on my own, I have to go to the main office with several other people... They haven't cared that I've been lone working at all hours for the last 10 years...

FunnyInjury · 20/03/2020 07:46

We're non essential I suppose, but as a small accountants our clients are still relying on us. I process wages, calculate and submit Vat returns and that sort of thing. I expect I will need to apply for grants and loans as they are made available.

Few clients suffering the effects very badly already.

SarahAndQuack · 20/03/2020 08:52

DP works in a lab that tests and develops medicines; she's been asked to come in but they do have very strict rules in place. She can't work from home and people need medicine, so I think it's probably right.

Sunshinedaffodil · 20/03/2020 08:59

Yep our office is open.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 20/03/2020 09:05

DH is still going in. There's only a certain amount he can do from home, but he's been working on the IT system so it's easier for at least some to work from home.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2020 09:19

Our office is open, I work in the manufacturing industry. We're a small business, obviously the factory workers can't work from home and neither can us in the office as we have to use special printers that are only available in the office. As long as we are getting orders we are staying open but it probably won't be for much longer.

Halfstonehomerun · 20/03/2020 10:27

Thanks for all the replies. I was getting a lot of texts asking when I will be stood down (not my terminology!)and I was beginning to feel I was very much in the minority. My work don’t really have a fantastic set up for home working and I may well be redeployed to work for services that really need me so I’m happy to keep going in for now.

We're construction and still working, its easy enough for the teams to maintain 2M and where we are working is quiet so minimal contact with anyone. We have issued H&S instructions about the virus too.

Our aim is to keep going as long as possible and invoice as much as we can whilst there are still people to process the payments, hopefully I can raise enough funds to keep paying the team if we need to shut down, even though they are all self employed I want to be able to help.

We also have the uncertainty of what the government is doing for small business to keep us afloat so the more we can do the better.

Blobby10 · 20/03/2020 12:21

Engineering firm here - we are all still in (17 of us) but factory based so no chance of working machines from home. Easy for factory staff to keep distance from each other and office staff have their own offices

MaJoady · 20/03/2020 12:28

Also manufacturing here. Global company (but one most will never have heard of). Shop floor people still in, manufacturing engineers on a staggered week and some office based staff at home. We also have sites in Northern Italy, Germany, China etc which are all still working so don't expect we will shut down any time soon.

Isthistrueor · 20/03/2020 12:53

DH’s workplace have told them even if the country goes into lockdown they expect them to go in. DH can easily WFH and they have sent staff who returned from abroad home to WFH already so I’m not entirely sure why this is their stance, seems so selfish.

MulticolourMophead · 20/03/2020 13:03

We are taking it in turns to go in, remaining time we are wfh. Problem is that we aren't really set up for wfh for most yet, and so our phone numbers aren't available if we are at home. Hence why one person is in each office. While in work, we can easily maintain social distance due to layout.

feelinguseless101 · 20/03/2020 13:51

Isthistrueor in a lock down scenario the decision will likely be taken out of their hands

happymummy12345 · 20/03/2020 14:12

My husband is a chef and he is still going to work (just). It's all well and good people saying avoid restaurants but he relies on customers walking through the door to pay his wages. As it is all staff are down on hours as there are way less customers than usual. Unless they are told they have to close he has no option but to hope they continue to come in. I'm a SAHM so we rely on his income to survive and tbh we only just get by as it is. Believe me if he could stay at home he would but the reality is he needs to work for as long as possible.

homemadecommunistrussia · 21/03/2020 07:20

Off to work shortly, not sure how much longer we will stay open. I expect it to be heaving.Hmm

TotallyKerplunked · 21/03/2020 07:57

I've been ordered in for Monday, I'm background staff in a school (science techician), I don't normally have any contact with the students so i'm not entirely sure what they want me to do. I'm also a single parent with 3 children who go to grandparents at times during the week when i'm working. Its crazy.

OddshoesOddsocks · 21/03/2020 08:08

Dp is still going into work. He’s a tree surgeon who does mostly council work, not public facing. They’ve all been given hand gel and a cleaning rota/products to ensure the vans and equipment are clean and sharing vans is banned for the time being. They’re often 2 meters or more apart anyway due to one of them being up a tree. They’ve been told that should they need to be off then it will be on full pay for the foreseeable but they’re going to keep going as long as possible. I’m not thrilled but appreciate that he’s in a better position than most.

I work in the village pub and have been isolated since Monday due to being pregnant. We’re all off from today due to it being closed and we’re not sure what will happen going forward!
