Asthma and Teaching

I have asthma, it’s not severe but usually affects me when I get a cold and with hay fever. I take a steroid inhaler during the periods it plays up and also have ventolin.

I’m confused about whether I should be self isolating or not - obviously I have an underlying condition. I’m a teacher, so far I’ve been at school every day but the advice is that from Monday people on the vulnerable list should self isolate. I’m concerned that I’ll be deemed to be taking advantage and abandoning my responsibilities if I wasn’t to keep working.

I was thinking that since teachers would most likely be working from home it wouldn’t be a problem - I’d self isolate from Monday but keep teaching remotely. But now it looks like I’ll be expected to be at school to provide childcare. Am I putting myself at risk by going in? Or do I tell school it’s risky and so I can’t, am I even allowed to say that?

So confusing - I want to keep myself safe but I also have a duty of care to my students. Added complication is that my kids would have to go to school and therefore likely to carry the virus back to me. Is that even considered a risk?

Sorry if this is an obvious situation, with all the guidelines I’m finding things hard and I don’t think I am being as rational as I usually am.

I'm in a similar situation. I don't have an underlying condition but my husband is over 70, has a suppressed immune system and COPD. I think that Im going to speak to his consultant and the NEU maybe. I feel guilty and like Im not pulling my weight, but I'm so worried about him.

That’s a difficult situation, I hope you get some answers. It’s awful that we should have to put the well-being of ourselves and loved ones at risk for fear of looking like we’re avoiding work.

Thank you. I will let you know how I get on. Actually, I think that I will contact HR at the MAT. It would definitely make sense for you to stay at home with your children. I hope that you get some clarity and support too.
