Supermarkets opening just for those who shouldn't even be there! Madness

The message from Prof Whitty is that vulnerable people need to stay at home. Not only to protect themselves but also the NHS + others.
The message from all the supermarket is 'come to us, it's fine, we'll even open it especially for you'

Why are the supermarkets allowed to encourage behaviour that is opposite to the official advice. I realise many will have problems with getting there food, but every effort should be taken to avoid them entering the physical shop surely.

Well instead of making the elderly and other people who are at high risk from Covid10. Why don't thet make more delivery slots and make them easily available to that group. Instead of not having any or making them wait 4 weeks for a delivery?

I mean how can you survive for 4 weeks without food?
What do they expect you to do?

It isn’t working families stripping shelves

And so it begins.

SallyLovesCheese · 22/03/2020 00:39

Why don't thet make more delivery slots - I've heard Tesco are hiring more drivers quickly. And Sainsbury's emailed to say they're prioritising the elderly and vulnerable and disabled for delivery slots.

Gingerkittykat · 22/03/2020 03:45

How do Sainsbury's know who is vulnerable? There were absolutely no slots bookable in my store anyway to give to these people.

Even if they could get slots many older people don't use the internet at all.

Sainsburys will be 7.30am mon-sat for the nhs and social care staff then 8-9am for the elderly & vulnerable mon weds and fri.
Sunday is normal trading hours for all x

This has come out

At the moment, even these people cannot get priority online grocery delivery slots.

Those who are 'only' old, don't stand a chance.

So unless they have found someone who will shop for them (there are many who are offering, but that doesn't mean it's actually working) they need to go to the shops.

Do we care enough about the vulnerable to stand clear for an hour each day to make it possible for them tomshop in less pressured (and hopefully less crowded) circumstances?

"Sainsburys will be 7.30am mon-sat for the nhs and social care staff then 8-9am for the elderly & vulnerable"

That really ought to be the other way round!

Have the vulnerable in first, after overnight cleaning. Not immediately after the customer group with highest likelihood of exposure from workplace

@Gingerkittykat Well they could ask for proff of ID such as a passport to prove they are over 70.
And they could make order for home delivery available by telephone.

Argos and Dunelm lets you order and buy items over the phone for home delivery, I have done it myself. You don't have to go online with them.

Gingerkittykat · 22/03/2020 16:05

It's easy to prove you are over 70 but not if you have an underlying health condition.

viccat · 22/03/2020 16:13

Many older people don't shop online at all - my mum is 76 this year and has never bought anything online, ever. She doesn't trust online payments are safe.

Many won't have family at all or anywhere nearby to help.

And it's hard to trust a volunteer from a community group, especially if you're not internet savvy or are socially isolated anyway.

Just a few reasons...

The very vulnerable will be getting letters, so they can flash a copy of that.

Not what those who are medically vulnerable but outside that group, would do. Recent doctor's letter?
