Kids are freaking amazing
Rollinghillside · 20/03/2020 00:09
I posted this as a message on another thread, but I feel like it needs a thread of its own.
I am a teacher setting work online. There are lots of bloody amazing secondary kids still online right now having a go at some of the tasks and sharing useful websites with each other.
I can see them. They're doing it right now in the chat channel, despite having been told to go to bed.
Kids are freaking amazing.
Some of them are doing it on their phones as they have no laptop or PC at home, and THEY are apologising to ME about this. Little legends.

I think you should shut the site off at a specific time. Exercise and relaxation is important too
namemypuppyplz · 20/03/2020 00:38
That's great but yeah I think I'd shut it down at 9pm. Its not good for kids to be online half the night.
namemypuppyplz · 20/03/2020 00:41
Kids are amazing though. DH, DC and I have been isolating as I've been unwell. DS who's only 3 kept himself entertained in the garden today for 6 hours with very minimal input from me. (DH wfh)
He hasn't seen another child since Monday and won't now for quite a while.
Rollinghillside · 20/03/2020 00:42
If I could shut it down at 6pm I would, but I don't have that control.
I am looking at the positive can-do attitude here.
Vebrithien · 20/03/2020 00:56
Pregnant teacher here.
I've had year 10 students emailing me, to check that I'm going to be okay, to wish me luck and to thank me for putting up work for them.
When it really matters, so many of them show you just how lovely they really are.
goelfyourshelf · 20/03/2020 01:01
I LOVE THIS! Totally the right attitude to get by in life - well done kids!
DeRigueurMortis · 20/03/2020 01:11
I agree OP.
DS (year 12) and his friends (self proclaimed nerds and proud - doing computer science A level) have been on skype calls today with each other and the Head of CS all offering IT support to families that might need it re: remote learning.
The school has been great and has a system in place but obviously the teachers need some time to re-plan lessons for virtual teaching.
In the meantime DS and friends have been doing telephone IT support to students who are having issues logging on to the system, resolving issues with laptops etc so once the materials come online everyone is ready and escalating issues to the HoCS they can't resolve (but obviously reducing the pressure on him and the school IT teachers and admins in the meantime).
I've been really proud listening to him today - hunkered down in the study. He's quite shy and reserved but he's made about 10 calls to help out other students today and fixed the issues for all of them and his friends have done similarly.

Can nobody remember what it was like to be a teen 😂 I was practically nocturnal.
Also imagine lots of them will probably stay home tomorrow.
That's really lovely Op, thank you for sharing
Rollinghillside · 20/03/2020 08:22
I wish I could share screenshots of some of their lovely conversations. Anyway - it's a little beacon of light in amongst all of this.
Vebrithien That's so nice - they're going to be golden in life!
DeRigueurMortis Wow! Fair play to your son and co!!
Falacy A very good point
