There are two videos in this link and the second is just heartbreaking - Italy

www.itv.com/news/2020-03-19/coronavirus-patients-in-italy-treated-as-numbers-as-death-toll-hit-nearly-3-000/

And these are testimonies from Italy's doctors from last week, the situation even worse now

Also, since the second link, which is dated 11 March, I have read news reports that Italy has ordered 5000 new ventilators, Germany 10000 and also France and the US are on the case.

Also there is a reference in one of the links to the virus staying on surfaces for 30 or 40 mins, but more recently there have been news reports stating that scientists now believe that the virus stays in the air in a room for a few hours and on surfaces for days.

Thank you for posting this. Bumping it up so more people see this.

SOCIAL DISTANCING IS NOT OPTIONAL ANYMORE!!

Magpiefeather · 20/03/2020 08:56

I’ve heard from an Italian friend that they don’t have enough coffins for the dead anymore. Bodies are taken by the army straight to cremation, no one is allowed to attend. Young and old are dying. It’s terrifying.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 09:02

Young people are not dying. The figures published yesterday say that 99% of those who died in Italy had underlying conditions.

That, of course does not mean that people should not be taking this seriously as younger people spread the disease to the more vulnerable,

Children are super spreaders. There's no excuse for anyone to still be doing any non essential socialising or going out.

wecanturnthetide · 20/03/2020 09:06

moomin8 people as young as 20 are getting the disease and having their lungs ruined by it, is what is being said by doctors everywhere.
They may not be the ones dying, but if not it is because they are getting the ventilators - the triage system is to decide who lives and who dies.

but I agree with you there is no excuse for anyone not to be taking this seriously now

The idea that you say good bye to a loved one at the time they go into hospital and from then you know they die alone and are buried without family near is really heartbreaking.

@Moomin8 can you read what you wrote? Why are you equating underlying conditions with not being young? You do realise that tons of young people have underlying conditions???

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 20/03/2020 09:10

Young people are not dying.

Yet. They are needing to be ventilated at alarming and quite unexpected rates and they’re spending longer needing ventilating than would be expected with flu. Eventually they’re going to start dying because we can’t treat them.

Zxyzoey31 · 20/03/2020 09:16

In that article one of the doctors said their youngest person on a ventilator was 38 without comordities.
The other said people in their 20s are needing assisted breathing.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 09:16

Why are you equating underlying conditions with not being young?

I'm not. Obviously there are younger people with underlying health conditions but the post I responded to was suggesting something else.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 09:22

There is a lady who is in ICU in the U.K. who is 39 and thinks she caught the virus from the gym. She's made a video warning people to stop unnecessary socialising and also to stop smoking.

wecanturnthetide · 20/03/2020 09:25

I'm not. Obviously there are younger people with underlying health conditions but the post I responded to was suggesting something else You are wrong, I think - the link I put in the OP has a doctor clearly saying that there are young people without comorbidities catching the virus. There was an ambulance worker in Italy who died from the virus - in his 30s and without comorbidities.

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 09:53

I wasn't referring to your post. Stop trying to argue about nothing.

People of all ages can catch the virus yes.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 09:54

One thing they are also finding out is that ibuprofen seems to make the virus worse. In many cases of younger people in icu they were taking ibuprofen.

The advice is to stick to paracetamol medication.

HermanHermit · 20/03/2020 09:57

Unfortunately this virus isn’t discriminating and only picking off the selfish fools who are insistent on keeping their coffee date with their friends / holding a birthday party / pippin to the shops while in isolation. It’s alarming how so many people understand so little

isabellerossignol · 20/03/2020 09:59

The NHS page says that there is no strong evidence that ibuprofen makes it worse, although they do advise paracetamol just in case.

Possibly the people who had ibuprofen in their system were taking it long term for the pain associated with other health conditions?

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 10:01

I saw a video yesterday of a 39yo in this country in ICU. Normally fit and well, gym bunny. Totally gasping for breath as she talked and said she's 10x better than a few days ago.

Emmacb82 · 20/03/2020 10:03

Until it’s made mandatory to stay indoors, and all the pubs, restaurants, soft plays, theatres etc are all shut, people will continue as normal. If it’s not happening to them or anyone close to them, they don’t understand the dangers of what they are doing. There are groups of parents arranging to meet others in big groups to keep the children entertained. People do not understand/choose to be ignorant. Now is the time for the government to spell out the dangers and to shut the country down. Even with those measures we are going to end up in a state. This is serious and this is real.

wecanturnthetide · 20/03/2020 10:46

@moomin8 Stop trying to argue about nothing I am not arguing for the sake of it. This isn't an ego thing for me, I am writing what I think it is important for everyone to know. I am not really sure what the point of your posts is to be honest. There are a lot of confused people out there and I think repeating the main points is important:

  • social isolation/lockdown
  • pressure on governments to provide support and adequate medical equipment.
  • make sure people are aware of what the responsible journalism is saying

@emmacb82 I agree and the sooner action is taken, the less damage will be done.
