Need flu jab, when to go food shopping

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:13

I am middle aged over weight and have sleep apnea amongst several other conditions and hence I get the yearly flu jab for healthy reasons. At night I use a cpap machine to keep me breathing.

I thought this meant I should be self isolating for the time being and asked my husband to do the weekly food shop.

He refused to and said I should continue to do the food shopping as normal. As long as I wash my hands when I get out I will be fine. He said unless I develop a cough or fever, there is no need to isolate and that is that the NHS said.

Is he right ? I am frightened and don't want to do the wrong thing.

I am thinking of going at 6am to the local supermarket, to try and avoid other people.
But not tomorrow, as they are reserving 6am to 9am for vulnerable older people.

I will take handgell and clean the trolley bar and the scan gun.

Anything else I should be doing to reduce risk.

Could you ask your DH to stop bring an arse and do the shopping instead of you?

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:17

He says I am being ridiculous and there is no need for me to stay home.

He works (now from home) my job is the house and food shopping. I can see why he doesn't want to take on more but I am so scared of getting sicker.

I think it was be more sensible for him to go.

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:26

He won't go.

What can I do to limit getting sick ?

You need a machine to help your breathing at night and he doesn’t think you might need to take extra precautions in terms of social distancing?Hmm

He’s an arse.

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2020 18:28

Avoid people.

Grumpbum123 · 19/03/2020 18:30

Your H is being an arse

RhymingRabbit3 · 19/03/2020 18:32

Those in the "medium risk" category like you should be minimising social contact as much as possible, so if you can avoid a trip to the shops that's ideal. Its not the same as social isolating which means you must not leave the house.

More to the point, why is your husband refusing? It sounds like he just can't be bothered to do the shopping, or he would rather risk your health than his own. Either way he isnt coming across as a prince!

PumpkinP · 19/03/2020 18:33

I’m a single mum so just have to go, I’m on the at risk list but I think it’s classed as essential and it’s ok to go out for essentials

RhymingRabbit3 · 19/03/2020 18:33

"He wont go"

Then you dont go either. Cook for yourself with whatever food you have available until he gets fed up and goes.

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:34

I am trying to avoid people but the kids need to eat.

I can't get any delivery or click and collect spots, despite having a delivery pass (like loads of people)

So the 6am shop is my hope it will be quiet then, I hope.

Honestly, he is risking your life because he's too lazy to go shopping. You should absolutely be self-isolating and he should wash hands on return. Do you have DC? What would happen if you didn't go? No food in the house. Run the cupboards down until there is nothing. Just drink liquids yourself for a few days. Keep telling him he is welcome to go and buy food and you'll happily cook it. Until then he can order takeaways or go hungry.
This is a line you need to draw.
You might still get some online deliveries by the way.

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:41

He doesn't think my medical issues are serious. He also pointed out even if he went, he would catch it and bring it back to me anyway. So it didn't matter who went. Which sounds logical.

Just feeling unloved. I had assumed that now he was working at home, he would do this one thing for me. I was so surprised that he wouldn't.

Logically I can see what he means.

I hope that this is a wake up call that he isn't a true partner. Do you have separate bedrooms? If you get the virus a Cpap machine spreads it into the room, so you have to completely isolate within your home. What would his plan be then?

I'm high risk. I have to provide childcare for my DD and get public transport. I'm wearing gloves when out. I distance myself from others. I'm washing my gloves when I get in and then washing my hands. I wash all the shopping that i can, take off outside wrappers and put them in an outside bin and then wash my hands again. Then, I'm washing down handles/paintwork I've touched etc.

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:45

I managed to get a slot 2 weeks time, so that will help.

"He also pointed out even if he went, he would catch it and bring it back to me anyway."

He could get it milder than you and show symptoms before you get it. He should be protecting you.

The Sleep apnoea association has information on their website. My friend's little boy has it.

Unshriven · 19/03/2020 18:49

Whatever you decide, I wouldn't count on it being quiet at 6am - rather the opposite.

The queues around here start at least two hours before opening.

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:49

We have a small house, one bathroom if one of is catches it, we all will. The kids and him will be fine. I have to pray their will still be hospital beds available for when I fall ill.

In one way I would rather get it now when there are still beds. Not later on when lack of bed mean, they have to decide who to treat and poorly fat middle aged me might not make the cut.

If you look at a shop in Google Maps, it can give you live feedback as to how busy the shop is as well as projected levels (a bit less useful, as these will be based upon longer term data).

Justchecking2020 · 19/03/2020 18:51

Thanks Gronky I will check Google maps
