How sad for people wanting the big wedding. Also no honeymoon. Really feel for couples who have planned for this summer

Where are you seeing this? That is ridiculous. So bride, groom and not even both sets of parents?

PleaseStopCrying · 19/03/2020 17:13

Its currently on the rolling news bar on BBC news. It seem such an odd number 6 including the bride and groom would have made so much more sense??

Church of England have said. Weddings and christenings

5 is the vicar, the couple and 2 legal witnesses required.

OwlBasket · 19/03/2020 17:18

Bride, groom, registrar/priest and two witnesses. Bare legal minimum and totally sensible.

Reginabambina · 19/03/2020 17:18

If anyone is trying to avoid a big wedding now is the time!

CherryPavlova · 19/03/2020 17:21

Oh how sad. We’ll definitely have to look carefully.

LuluJakey1 · 19/03/2020 17:22

It is my idea of a wedding.

happilybemused · 19/03/2020 17:24

I had a very small wedding by choice but for a lot of people and their parents it's a big deal.

Mind you, I got married abroad do that wouldn't be going ahead either 😟

Legal minimum required, two witnesses and registrar/priest.

happilybemused · 19/03/2020 17:29

@graymare that's where they got 5 from. Thank you

Well, that was my wedding in 1981! Me, DH, 2 witnesses and a registrar.
It’s the relationship, and the marriage, that matter, not the wedding.
Couples marrying during the pandemic can always have a celebratory party when it’s over, or for their first anniversary next year instead. This might actually be a good thing - stopping families taking on huge debt to have splashy weddings. They could put the money saved towards a mortgage deposit.

happilybemused · 19/03/2020 17:33

@babdoc that was my thinking but my in laws refused to speak to me for months. My SIL spent 25k on a wedding that lasted 6 months so they forgave me after that

Especially if you have children together, it's far more important to be legally married during this time than ever before. A big wedding and honeymoon aren't as important as the legal benefits marriage or civil partnership confers.

MauriceandAlec · 19/03/2020 17:42

I agree, Babdoc, or into savings for times of decreased or under employment.

TitilatedOcelot · 19/03/2020 17:46

My wedding plans have been cancelled. Had an appointment to give notice at my local registry office, they phoned and cancelled it yesterday, claiming registrars will be too busy with death certificates to perform weddings!

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 19/03/2020 17:51

Church of England have said weddings limiting to 5.
I suppose if venues still choose to cater for bigger numbers for the reception they could.

TitilatedOcelot · 19/03/2020 17:58

We hadn't booked a venue yet, which is why I think they bumped us. Just wanted us and witnesses so had planned to check the registry office diary at our appointment and pick a date then.

midwestspring · 19/03/2020 18:13

This is the point of non essential social distancing.
This is it being done correctly.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/03/2020 18:17

For the first time there are benefits to not being Christian in this country. The 5 person limit only applies to church weddings.

midwestspring · 19/03/2020 18:19

The point of social distancing is to prevent needless deaths.
Being able to avoid this isn't really much of an advantage in any semi-civilized society.

MauriceandAlec · 19/03/2020 18:33

The 5 person limit only applies to church weddings.

Let's hope the councils wise up and apply the same. Social distancing is vital to protect those most vulnerable from the virus and completely necessary.

ShellsAndSunrises · 19/03/2020 18:37

The 5 person limit only applies to church weddings.

Not according to my registry office; who have called to say that further information will be coming but that the GRO has enforced a maximum of 6 guests per wedding until the end of May...

MauriceandAlec · 19/03/2020 18:54

This might actually be a good thing - stopping families taking on huge debt to have splashy weddings.

And hopefully, too, the end of the ridiculous destination, lengthy stag and hen do's with guests expected to blow hundreds if not more and use annual leave.

Scruffyoak · 19/03/2020 18:57

Surely it's still a wedding. Doesn't matter really does it?
