The government needs to crack down on enforcing isolation/social distancing

A new wave of schools locally have closed their doors - meaning the playgrounds, fields and local shops are seething with children and teenagers playing games, mucking about and - seemingly - touching as many things and each other as much as possible. Lots of talk of going away.

In short - it's being treated like a bonus school holiday.

We're going the same way as Italy and Spain.

Are people just thick? Does the government need to (somehow) make it even clearer that the schools closing doesn't mean extra socialisation/out of the house time but instead people need to STAY AT HOME as much as possible??

Is there any feasible way the govt can enforce this?

Usually I'm immensely grateful for the freedoms we enjoy in a modern, democratic country - but there's something to be said about a repressed society who is used to taking strict direction from the authorities...

Yeah-they could have invested a load of money in policing over the last few years instead of stripping it to the bone.

Rocketmam · 19/03/2020 17:05

I agree.

We are isolating but can see in facebook that people are already planning lots of outings to softplay, house parties and pubs/clubs/eating out and visiting their elderly relatives.

I think people get it, I just think there are too many 'I'm alright Jack' selfish bastards out there.

They don't want any inconvenience coming into their lives just because someone else might die.

Our NHS is fucked because without 'lockdown' we don't have a chance of conatining it ior protecting the vulnerable.

NameofTheWind · 19/03/2020 17:09

I don't think people understand the effects this will have on the economy.

It's bigger than the direct medical effect - if we don't all take this seriously, and stop the spread of it - we're facing a global recession, even depression, which will leave scores of people bankrupt, homeless, unemployed for years and years.

I'm not sure people truly understand how vulnerable they are

store where i work was heaving today

its diy,so non food....stocking up on projects to do during lockdown. not fair on the staff who are sitting ducks, soaking up everyones' germs

the rudeness is becoming intolerable too

Reginabambina · 19/03/2020 17:15

Yes. It’s a shame that there was t anything that could have been done to prevent this like not closing schools or something.

lubeybooby · 19/03/2020 17:31

Look what's happening to Italy even though they did heavily lock down. And we still aren't

Even though we have the example and know what's coming. I despair.

Everyone still out socialising - hope you're happy when your gran dies and you can't have a funeral for her and your dad needs a ventilator but so do 1000 others and there is one left. This will be on BJ's head too for not enforcing it.

Connie222 · 19/03/2020 17:34

I honestly can’t believe that we are not going into lockdown.
It scares me how blasé people are.

esmerelda1988 · 19/03/2020 17:44

I've been in since Monday and don't intend to go out- 11 weeks pregnant. If other people won't take action to protect everyone then I feel you have to do it yourself if you're vulnerable but it really fucks me off that others are just prancing around like nothing is going on and likely making the situation more serious and elongated.

Peapod29 · 19/03/2020 17:46

We will be Italy but worse because we have less beds, I can’t understand why they aren’t enforcing lockdown now in cities. From what I can tell from relatives most people in cities are just not following the advice.

highlandcoo · 19/03/2020 17:47

The press conference today was worse than useless. Woolly and indecisive. Not taking charge at all. Dear God Sad

butIwontdothat · 19/03/2020 17:59

@Reginabambina keeping schools open isn't the solution. Children and staff are not immune to CV and while children show mild to no symptoms, and have the potential to pass it on to their families, each other and the staff teaching them - Schools should always have been included in the measures to prevent CV spreading.
It's the utter arrogance of the government not taking stock of what was happening in China and Italy - and the austerity measure we've lived under, that has seen the NHS and other essential services cut and underfunded.

Scruffyoak · 19/03/2020 18:01

I've seen kids playing out here too in the park. Are the parents missing the point? Social club is still open too and was busy.

LastTrainEast · 19/03/2020 18:07

"Are people just thick?" many of them yes, but partly I suppose people in countries like ours are used to 'The government' sorting it out and making it all go away. Danger is something that happens on TV.

Unshriven · 19/03/2020 18:08

It's just that the government isn't sending a strong enough message.

Other countries enforces distancing/isolation.

Boris just thinks it's a vaguely interesting thing to look at.

The shops are open, so are pubs, and restaurants.

The list of 'key workers' is ever expanding, so school is not so much shutting down, as becoming an optional extra.

People are not seeing any change day to day, they are not being compelled to change, and are assuming there isn't any danger.

ShanghaiDiva · 19/03/2020 18:13

On another thread I said that when this happened in China I was glad not to live in a democracy. Posters called me moronic. Having been out today (supermarket for my 70 plus mum and her next door neighbours) I want to say: who is moronic now? People are out in cafes and at the gym.. it beggars belief. They are the morons.
China did not allow us to think about whether the rules applied to us and this saved lives.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/03/2020 18:15

Johnson reminds me of those parents who let their kids run amok in a restaurant feebly pleading with them to sit down nicely, and then failing to follow through on their threat to not let them have pudding.

I’ve been thinking this too recently.

People swanning about, going to the pub, family gatherings etc. We’ve gone into lockdown as we live with an 90 year old. My partner has said his family hasn’t with his grandparents as it’s not really known that’s what’s meant to happen.

Some people said they don’t like watching the news. Some people think if they just wash their hands they’re fine. Some people think they had it before Christmas.

Some people don’t care. Some people don’t understand. Some people don’t have the basic logic to get their head around it.

I tried explaining to someone: if you shake hands with one person and they’ve shook hands with 5 other people that means you’ve been in contact with 6 people plus the rest. And it completely went over their head.

I’ve also made a comment that we should put measures in place now so we don’t end up like Italy. I got told we should just focus on now and not think too far ahead.

Those who are being foolish I have zero sympathy

Oblomov20 · 19/03/2020 18:31

I think PM will have to take action.
Because people are just too stupid and selfish.

People announcing they went to the pub last night, a funeral today, parents arranging mass meet ups as soon as they announce that schools are closing.

So stupid. Beggars belief! Hmm

OrchidFlakes · 19/03/2020 18:37

We’ve got friends all meeting for a pub dinner on Saturday (almost 20 of them) and planning social meet ups all week with the kids (8+ at a time) all protesting insanity if they don’t!. I just don’t understand what planet they are on. We haven’t left the house for anything other than food in almost a week and don’t intend to start any time soon.
And don’t start me on those who think they are a key worker so their kids should stay in school!

RhymingRabbit3 · 19/03/2020 18:40

I wouldnt mind people acting like this if they were only putting themselves at risk. If they want to risk themselves or their kids dying because they want to go to soft play, fine. But it doesnt just affect them - likelihood is they will be fine but someone they've never met with a weakened immune system, or their neighbour who is 85, could die as a result of their actions and I personally think that's disgusting.

Absolutely this. Also by increasing transmission and number of cases they are making it less likely those who need hospital care can get it, for covid or anything else.

I think in a week or so when it is carnage they might wake up. Right now they can't seem to see that they are creating the cases that will cause that carnage. They are killers, maybe not with that explicit calculated intent but basically they are. Just killers. It sounds dramatic but it really is the truth.
