More cases in Cumbria than many parts of london?

Really confused by this.
I’m from Ambleside in Cumbria. Not there at present as was stating with OH about 70 miles away. A bit concerned about returning at moment due to talk of massive exodus.

But when reading gov charts, it seems there are more cases in Cumbria and south lakes than many areas of London, manchester and other major cities.

The official case count in Cumbria says 34 but local health experts report 42 so far to date.

Anyone know why Cumbria has such high routes if it’s population density is so low?

I might hold on and not return for time being.....

High rates, not routes!

Weren’t the Cumbrian tourist board advising Londoners to self-isolate in the Lakes (and thus all accomodation prices increased), or was that an urban myth?

Musicforsmorks · 19/03/2020 16:59

Yes, it was ‘visit Cumbria.com’.
But I’ve heard many are encouraging visitors to isolate there from cities.
Madness I know.

But Cumbria has had steadily high rates compared to rest of north west for last few weeks.

It’s so strange isn’t it. I’m in Cumbria and it’s concerning. A family member has symptoms and has had contact with a confirmed case before they became symptomatic. They are in a tiny village, well hamlet really. A nurse friend who works in A&E locally said to me on Wednesday that there is only 1 confirmed case at FGH. So at least they’re al lots of people seriously ill here, yet.

Cornettoninja · 19/03/2020 17:02

I would guess at tourism tbh. It would make sense someone who enjoys travelling may have been to the continent or in contact with someone who had been there and then to cumbria between half term and now.

BeatsV · 19/03/2020 17:04

The first case in Carlisle had come back from Italy according to the local paper.

Musicforsmorks · 19/03/2020 17:04

Worrying though if tourism kicks off in a big way.

I’m miles away at moment and have no idea what my home area will be like right now. Have a feeling I ought to stay put and only go home when I can find out more, if that’s even possible.....

It seems weird how I’m a local, but scared of going home, and tourists are being encouraged to come in. My head is spinning a bit 🤪

All,local, publications and websites are oddly quiet about the high rates or reasons for it.

It’s like everyone is so scared of tourism crashing they’ll try to look the other way.

A pub in our town was on Facebook last night virtually begging people to go there this weekend, unless they have symptoms. I do feel sorry for pubs, restaurants, shop selling non essentials, but I think it’s irresponsible to encourage people to congregate!

Musicforsmorks · 19/03/2020 17:33

I’m concerned it’s going to explode in south lakes.
From what I hearing places are still packed with tourists.
Not sure about Ambleside but was there last week and it was very busy 😳

I’m just wondering also why there’s no authority/press dialogue about why rates are so high , these are London levels, but correct me if I’m wrong.

School trips to Italy? My cousins kids from south lakes were skiing there not that long ago...
tourists...
second home people?

BeatsV · 19/03/2020 17:37

We’re fucked them, the hospitals don’t cope when there’s a norovirus outbreak, so this will definitely very soon be too much. Hardly any ICU beds as they send people to Lancaster, Newcastle etc normally.

wondering about this too. I have rented a house in the Lakes in April as we do every year. Really wondering what to do...

Just spoken to my mum, who lives in south Cumbria. I'm sure it's the same in other parts of the country too but it seems people there aren't taking it very seriously.

e.g. managers refusing to let their staff take time off, people with coughs not self isolating, pubs encouraging people to carry on going out. Also a lot of misinformation being spread about e.g. "you have to have a cough and a fever" or "you need to get confirmation from 111 before you can self isolate."
